AXA's Announcement showed it had stopped underwriting new insurance business and renewals for its Russian clients’ assets located in Russia. It also stopped new reinsurance, including renewals, as well as investments in Russian assets.

Regarding its 38% stake in Russian insurance company Reso Garantia, Axa stated it has "no operational or management control” and has decided to remove its directors from the board. The company stated it “condemns the invasion of Ukraine”.

Date of Announcement: 25 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

Some companies take a long time to make a move but have a lot to offer when they do. Other companies are swift but do very little. Then, we have Axa, which did almost nothing slowly. Axa’s Announcement came after peers such as Generali, earning it a Chicken Penalty, and after public criticism, earning it a Pressure Penalty.

Axa's Degree score of 0.7 is about as low as you can get without doing nothing. We don’t give much credit for stopping new business, plus it did not take any action on its investment in Reso Garantia, apart from removing directors. Leaving the board may send a signal but it does nothing to damage the Russian economy. Axa should look to peer company Zurich, which is divesting totally from Russia. As for its promise to stop investments in Russian assets, how many companies with the understanding of risk that the insurance industry has would do such a thing in the current climate? We therefore class this statement as a Red Herring.

The irony of waiting so long to do so little is compounded by then making such a strong statement against Russia. For that, we define Axa as a Big Talker.

Axa and Generali are competitors in the market, but they are also competitors in the ‘moral market’, to such an extent that it is difficult to separate one from the other. Both curtailed their directly owned business in Russia with carve-outs (making them Nibblers in our terminology). Both failed to make any move out of their investments in minority stakes in Russian businesses. And both resigned from the boards of those companies, as though that somehow makes it okay. Both can be admonished for the same deficiencies in a single breath.

XMXYG has been a major importer of Russian coal, and, since the invasion, it indicated on a Chinese platform that a small proportion of its business is in Russia. No withdrawal Announcement has been monitored.
Our Moral Verdict

It is disappointing that the company can make a statement that it isn’t highly exposed to Russia but, at the same time, not say what it will or won’t actually do. Peer Chinese company Sinochem is at least rumored to be avoiding Russian oil, despite having greater Exposure than XMXYG.

We don’t expect much from Chinese companies, but, even if XMXYG isn’t allowed to speak directly to the world, a rumor is always welcome.

Dell exports computers and related products to Russia. Its website currently states that Dell provides support services to its data storage and protection solutions in Russia. It has "suspended all product sales in Russia", as reported in Wall Street Journal. It stated, "It's a great tragedy and very disappointing to see a humanitarian disaster". We have not monitored a statement on the in-country operations.
Date of Announcement: 1 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
The Announcement looks convincing, but we found saw no reference to inside-Russia Activities. The jobs part of Dell's site shows positions have been offered in the company's St. Petersburg Development Center (working with data storage and protection systems) and in Moscow and the regions in marketing, sales, presales, implementation, and consulting. In the absence of these being included in the Announcement, we reduced its Degree Score to 7. In Speed it got Chicken Penalty for being behind HP. Dell was a Mealy-Mouther when it came to its reason, failing to clearly take sides in the war but a donation of around 0.5% of profits brought its Attitude Score up. Comparing its Russian revenues with total revenues for 2020, it would have had an Exposure level of 2. The booster we give to Dell's products and services gave it a Power measure of 10, leading to a Return on Sacrifice of 500%.

Exxon said it is “beginning the process to discontinue operations and developing steps to exit the Sakhalin-1 venture.” It also said in the same statement that it “will not invest in new developments in Russia”. BBC also reported that it would “end a multi-billion-dollar joint venture with Russian state-owned company Rosneft”.

On 11 March, it commented on its 7.5% stake in the Caspian Pipeline Consortium: "No ExxonMobil equity crude that is transported via the Caspian pipeline en route to the US or Europe is from Russia," adding, "The Caspian pipeline delivers oil and gas from Kazakhstan and is not subject to sanctions at this time."

On 4 April, it said it "suspended" the Sakhalin-1 project. On 24 April, it was reported that it is "considering a complete withdrawal from Russia by 24 June." The company said it has "significantly phased down its chemical and lubricant businesses", limiting sales to "existing contractual commitments" and "essential products".

On 27 April, Reuters reported its Russian unit Exxon Neftegas Ltd has "declared force majeure for its Sakhalin-1 operations due to sanctions on Russia that have made it increasingly difficult to ship crude to customers."

The company published the following statement on their website: "We deplore Russia’s military action, which has violated Ukraine’s territorial integrity and endangered its people".

Date of Announcement: 1 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

Exxon has made a lot of statements but that doesn't mean it has actually done very much. As per our standard procedure, we have rated it on its 1 March Announcement. This focused on the Sakhalin-1 project without covering the full range of Exxon Activities. Instead, of providing these details, the company said it "will not invest in new developments in Russia" which we classed as a Red Herring. Depending on their nationality, companies in the sector are mostly facing the pressure of sanctions and difficulty in finding a buyer for the assets. Nevertheless, they behave in different ways.

Exxon Announced after TotalEnergies, BP, Royal Dutch Shell, Equinor, for which we gave it a Chicken Penalty. It made a picture-perfect Denouncer statement and donation to Ukraine which earned it 10 out of 10 for Attitude.

Following the Announcement, it made a series of other statements suggesting it is moving forward with its withdrawal, but they were not concrete. It talked about suspending the Sakhalin-1 project but it is not clear what that means if it is still a shareholder. This presumably covers suspending financial transactions and/or shipments of LNG, while it remains a shareholder. It also said the oil it obtained from the Caspian Pipeline Consortium in which it has a stake was not Russian oil (since this was segregated from Kazakh oil). That doesn't mean the company's continued involvement in the pipeline is acceptable because it is a shareholder in a pipeline that continues to help Russia get its oil to the coast, which Russia can then sell to companies other than Exxon. Exxon focused on its purchase of oil from the pipeline rather than its ownership in the pipeline and its continuing ability to serve Russia.

A lot of the company’s reactions have been in response to sanctions. For the activities not covered by sanctions, it is talking about reducing them. It is a mixed picture of actions under legal pressure, strong statements, and vague information which makes it difficult to assess how much it is doing more than what it needs to do. The Speed, Attitude, Exposure and Power Scores are relatively easy to assess. Degree of withdrawal of the Announcement is rated at 3.6 based on giving Exxon credit for acting on 90% of its Activities and yet attending to them to the extent of 40%.

The company said it had "suspended substantially all" of its "sales, distribution and service activities in Russia and Belarus" referring to "conditions" in Eastern Europe. It also said it hoped to see a "peaceful resolution", and its thoughts were with the "refugees".
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
Honeywell's statement included three words, "suspended substantially all", to describe its withdrawal from Russia, attaching them to some business categories covered. From this, we can't be sure exactly what is going on (for example the status of its manufacturing activities and investments in the country), but we can say that some businesses have been carved out, which makes it a Partial move. Also, suspending puts it into the Mothballer category. The company lost points on Speed because of a Chicken Penalty for being behind Samsung Electronics. It also got a zero score on Attitude: the reason for its action didn't directly admonish Russia or properly address the issue, and we didn't monitor any donation to Ukraine. It gets a lot of Power from being in a sector with high impact, on top of employing 1,000 people in Russia. We hope Honeywell will get out fully and completely, and be more clear on its business dealings with Russia.

According to Universal's company statement, Comcast-owned Universal Pictures, "paused planned theatrical releases in Russia." The next day, Russia lost its retransmission on the Sky platforms that are owned by Comcast, as reported by Broadband TV News. On March 8th, Universal Music Group, owned by Comcast, said via a company statement it was "suspending all operations in Russia and closing [its] offices there." Comcast Business also said that it is "waiving charges for calls, data, and Global Travel Pass usage to and from Ukraine" for customers from 20 February to 31 May.
Date of Announcement: 1 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
Comcast's Announcement was Full and almost Complete, which is why it didn't get a 10 in Degree. It was quite fast to make its move, but other peers got out first, resulting in 6 for Speed. The company fell down on Attitude. We didn't spot a statement about the war, so we classed it as a Strong Silent Type. Nor did we monitor any donation to help Ukraine. All of these factors eroded its Moral Rating and brought it down to 65. Breaking with Russia was a good moral-commercial move to make. We calculated the Exposure across the different businesses at 1, which compares to the 10 it had in Power. We give mass market entertainment channels and services credit for a high Multiplier Effect because of their Ostracizing impact on large numbers of people locally. The result is that Comcast was looking at a 10 to 1 Return on Sacrifice opportunity and it's no surprise that it made the decision to get out.

After mounting boycotting pressure, PepsiCo suspended production in Russia, apart from essential food items such as milk and baby food because of its "humanitarian obligation" mentioning this would allow it to support 20,000 employees and 40,000 agricultural workers in its supply chain. The CEO said, "My heart goes out to all those who are caught in the middle of this deadly conflict. As it so often does, war is falling hardest on the innocent. War is never an answer, and we join all those calling for a speedy, peaceful resolution."
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
PepsiCo and Coca-Cola seem to look over their shoulders at each other, even in times of war. It is perhaps no surprise that they made their moves away from Russia at almost the same time, each afraid of being singled out for escalated consumer boycotting and focused admonishment by Ukraine's government. There were of course many other food & beverage businesses with different positions on the topic, but in the court of popular opinion these two were going to be measured against one another. Based on the Bloomberg reports, Pepsi was 17 minutes behind Coca-Cola. Google showed a link to the Coca-Cola release even earlier. So, PepsiCo was first into the Soviet Union (1974) and last out of Russia. The company is much more deeply in the country as a result, in range of products, factories, number of employees (20,000 vs. 7,000 for Coca-Cola), and a 5% impact on profits vs. 2% for Coca-Cola. Pepsi therefore gets more points for Sacrifice but less on other measures. Its Speed Score got a Chicken Penalty as well as a Pressure Penalty for moving post-boycott. Its Degree Score is damaged by being Partial & Incomplete: Partial because it excluded milk products as a Confused Humanitarian does, and Incomplete because it is continuing to support its workforce and 40,000 Russian farmers, as a Nibbler does. This means 60,000 fewer people financially motivated to pressure Putin. Its Attitude was damaged by being a Mealy-Mouther: by saying people are "caught in the middle" avoids taking sides. Pepsi needs to get out Fully and Completely and sell its factories.

Koç is linked to Russia via numerous subsidiaries, such as Arcelik and Tupras, which have local production facilities. We have not monitored any withdrawal Announcement.
Our Moral Verdict
Koç is Turkey’s only representative in Fortune’s Global Top 500 companies. It’s a shame, therefore, that it hasn’t even made it off the starting blocks in the world’s slow race to leave Russia. If it disposed of its Russian production facilities, it could rescue, in a single shot, Turkey’s reputation from 0% failure to 100% success out of this sample of one.

Saudi Aramco relies on extraction technologies from Russian Novomet, in which it also has a 31% stake. Aramco is 98.5%-owned by Saudi Arabia. Its energy minister, according to the Financial Times on 22 May, signaled that it would stand by Russia as a member of OPEC+ and said the “world should appreciate the value” of the alliance of producers.

Saudi Aramco itself has not made any withdrawal Announcement, but CEO Amin Nasser described the invasion as a "tragic situation unfolding in Ukraine”.

Our Moral Verdict

We have given Aramco a low rating for keeping its Novomet stake because our ratings are based on withdrawing from existing business with Russia. However, if our methodology extended to what damage a company could do beyond withdrawing its own business Russia, we would deduct a further 100 points in this case: Aramco – subject of course to the permission of the Saudi kingdom – could have stopped the oil price rise that is helping Russia offset the impact of boycotts and sanctions that we are advocating. Few companies in the world could so powerfully close the loop on Russia.

If anyone thinks this is beyond its power, or is without precedent, don’t forget that Saudi Arabia used such a strategy to try and put the U.S. shale industry out of business in 2014.

It’s sad that Aramco uses such power for profit and not morality. Indeed, the regime that controls the company, and is accused of being behind the murder of a dissident journalist in its Istanbul embassy, is hardly one from which we can expect any moral satisfaction. Asking Prince Mohammed Bin Salman to find Putin abhorrent would be like asking him to engage in hypocrisy. It looks like Aramco isn’t going to be the secret bullet to undermine the Russian economy.

There are conflicting media reports about whether Lenovo, which owns Motorola, is still operating in Russia. Belarusian media outlet Nexta tweeted that Lenovo “suspended shipments of products to Russia." On 6 May, the Wall Street Journal said the company had quietly left the Russian market.
Date of Announcement: 6 May 2022
Our Moral Verdict
This is the strange case of a Chinese company that has apparently made some effort to withdraw from Russia. Less strange, is that the company said very little. We don't give companies much credit for actions they are not disclosing themselves where we need to rely solely on indirect reports from the field or third parties (only 2 points in Degree are applicable). It is rated based on a Wall Street Journal report in May that the company had quietly withdrawn. As a result, it gets low Degree and Speed scores. Moreover, for remaining quiet and disclosing no donation to Ukraine, it gets 0 for Attitude. All of this produced a 0 moral rating. It has a lot of Power in Russia leading to an 800% Return on Sacrifice based on its de minimus Exposure. So, it is a pity the way the company decided to take action undermined its moral rating: it would have been nice to report that Lenovo was leading Chinese corporations in a moral direction in terms of transparency, speed and spirit. That said, it has a major Strategic Disturbance effect. When even Chinese companies start withdrawing, albeit discreetly, it can't go unnoticed by Putin.

Notice

The entire website and our rating methodology are based on a company’s involvement with Russia being measured by Announcements.

We measure this against the ways a company can be involved with Russia through its Activities.

Please also be aware of the Scope of our research, limitations due to Incomplete Information, our Rating Methodology , and our policy relating to any Errors, Omissions & Corrections.

Also, be aware that brands carry the rating information of the company that owns, controls or is associated with them as defined more precisely in Brands Displayed.

The basis of “Rating as of” date is explained here.

Want to give us information on a company?

We will be extending our service from the top 200 companies in the world to the top 500. We are interested in information about their continuing involvement with or in Russia from reliable published sources.

Want to suggest a correction to your company?

If you represent a corporation and feel it is inaccurately or otherwise unfairly presented, you should email us in the window below a scan of a document signed by a director of the ultimate parent company (“Parent”) we listed on the site, stating your position about our information as of the ‘Rating as of’ date listed below our information providing a clear factual statement in support of your disagreement in such a manner and in sufficient detail that we will be able to re-rate the company in accordance with our Rating Methodology. If you do not provide sufficient detail, we will not consider re-rating and do not have time to engage in discussions but will solely consider sufficiently comprehensive information via this process.
