According to the company's Announcement, it took the decision to "temporarily" close its "own" stores and directly operated counters, as well as "suspending industrial and national media investments", and closing its "own brand" e-commerce sites in Russia. It said it was "still taking care" of its 2,500 Russian employees. It pledged donations of up to €5 million with the words, "strongly condemn the Russian invasion."

Our Moral Verdict
This is a case of a company doing something by half measure and then only to some degree. L'Oréal has stopped is retailing-facing businesses, but the Announcement doesn't close off its product sales through other people's stores. On top of what we define as Half-Hearted, it said the decision was "temporary". Also, it is classified as a Nibbler for continuing to support its 2,500 employees. All these deficiencies continue to feed the Russian economy. The statement wasn't helpful, explaining what the company temporarily did rather than what it didn't (manufacturing in Russia), and it included a Red Herring about not making future investments. What we need to know is when it will stop what it is doing, rather than that it will not do what it isn’t yet doing! L'Oréal waited to make its move until after P&G, for which we gave it a Chicken Penalty on Speed. Unlike many Confused Humanitarian peer companies in the consumer product sector, it resisted the temptation to say it was producing essential goods. Indeed, that would be a stretch for a brand associated more with cosmetic than pure health, and luxury rather than staple. L'Oréal might have been furious to see P&G making “personal care" one of its carve-outs. Against all of this, L'Oréal strangely was a Denouncer, with a bold statement against Russia. This might make propagandized Russian consumers less likely to want to touch L'Oréal products still on the shelves. Like Unilever, this is either a case of hypocrisy or one part of the company thinks Russia is bad and the other thinks it is fine to do business there.

According to Reuters, the company is "discontinuing" local production and has "halted" the export of cars to Russia. A day later, Interfax reported that BMW is "halting the manufacturing of its automobiles at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad", and Russian news agency TASS said its local partner Avtotor intends to retain the employees after BMW's withdrawal. The company said, "We condemn the aggression against Ukraine".

Our Moral Verdict
This is a bold and fast move. It covers both exports to Russia and production in the country. Unlike many in the sector, BMW resisted playing the game of furloughing employees to see what will happen, as many other automakers did. It was a bit easier for BMW because of the relatively small production in Russia and level of exports to the country. GM and Mercedes-Benz beat BMW in the Speed of Announcement, so BMW lost 2 points in Chicken Penalty. Full marks, however, to the company for being a Denouncer. This sort of comment burns bridges, so BMW may have trouble getting back into Russia short of a regime change. The impact of a luxury brand leaving boosts the Power score, which gave the company a 500% Return on Sacrifice for doing the right thing. Nice moral-commercial investment.

Channel News Asia reported on 2 March the company "was stopping deliveries to Russia and Belarus", an article that has since been deleted. The company statement on 9 March did confirm its "inbound services to Russia and Belarus have been suspended" and it is "also not accepting shipments to those countries until further notice".

Our Moral Verdict
The company's moral behavior is disappointing when compared to FedEx and UPS, which both managed to make the move on the day of the invasion. Deutsche Post DHL waited until a week later (if we had given them credit for the deleted media report on 2 March), which is a long time in a morally competitive world where others acted within hours. It also followed France's La Poste. All of this bought the company's Speed Score down 2 further points due to a Chicken Penalty. The Announcement is a Full but Incomplete one because we see no plan to sell the operations in Russia, which makes Deutsche Post a Mothballer. As for Attitude, it didn't come out well either: it made a Mealy-Mouther statement without any admonishment of Russia, and we spotted no donation to Ukraine. In practical terms, this is a company with tiny Exposure to Russia which we calculated at a score of 1. By contrast, it scored 7.5 in Power through a combination of the 3,500 employees it has in Russia and the Multiplier Effect that we add to logistics companies that can damage Russian commerce. This produced a mouth-watering Return on Sacrifice opportunity of 750%. It's a surprise the company didn't calculate how much good it could do with so little pain, and then moved fast like the others. It could have easily received 20 more points as UPS did.

It said it has a "team of software developers mainly in St. Petersburg who provide services to customers outside Russia." It has given these employees the opportunity to work outside Russia. Our Moral Verdict
This giant company didn't have a large presence in Russia, and it has done about as much as it could. The company moved fast and was first in its sector, beating Comcast, Charter Communications and Vodafone Group by a week or more. So, it was awarded a Leader of Pack bonus of 2 points within the Speed Score. We calculated its donation at only 0.02% of profits, hence an Attitude Score of 5. More impressive was its strong verbal criticism of Russia. The use of the word "incursion" rather than "invasion" wasn't optimal, but for a global telecom company to say it is "appalled" remedied the statement. Thus, it won Denouncer status. The team of engineers in St. Petersburg gives the company a Multiplier Effect in Power since it was involved in software programming, which gave it a 1,000% Return on Sacrifice.

Jardine Matheson manages the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in Moscow, a hotel and luxury residence project. No Announcement has been found about the company's disengagement in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Our Moral Verdict
Jardine’s should terminate its subsidiary's role as manager and licenser of the Mandarin Oriental brand name to the Russian project. Our Moral Force Majeure policy means the company should revoke the contract and suffer the financial damages, even if it doesn't have a cancelation clause. Most brand licensing agreements can escape clauses if the licenser's brand is brought into disrepute by association, though it may need to be as a result of the counterparty. Nevertheless, if there is a cost in damages to the giant Jardine Matheson group, so be it. This would send a strong message to Russia from a famous China-based company.

On 25 February, Nathaniel Gleicher, Meta's Head of security policy, tweeted it was "now prohibiting Russian state media from running ads" or "monetizing" on the platform. On 21 March, Reuters reported Meta had been found guilty of "extremist activity" by a Moscow court. Russia accounts for 1.5% of Meta's advertising revenues, according to CFO Dave Wehner.

Our Moral Verdict

Has Meta behaved well? If we consider that it acted one day after the invasion, that it pulled state-run media company ads on Facebook, took down anti-Ukrainian activities on its platform, and that Russia retaliated by finding Meta guilty of extremist activity in a Moscow court, it looks like a perfect picture.

However, when we look deeper, we see a different picture. First, the Announcement didn't carry a leadership level denouncement of Russia, making Meta a Mealy-Mouther. But the real failing is that the company continues to offer a major online advertising platform to most companies in Russia. This is of value to the Russian economy or it wouldn't be using the platform. Meta is right that it has a moral duty to allow Russian people to use its media to avoid government censorship and propaganda by obtaining information and communicating with each other freely. But it doesn't need to run advertising at the same time. It could easily be an ad-free environment. That way, Meta could help democracy by undermining censorship and propaganda, while also undermining the economy.

Since Meta, unlike Alphabet's Google, is lining its pockets in this way, we have given it 2 points in Degree for its state-media advertising ban. It gets 10 out of 10 on Speed, by making its move a week before Alphabet and ten days before Amazon.

Since 1.8% of its revenues come from Russia, we gave it an Exposure level of 3.5. Its Power is extreme, from a combination of economic and psychological factors. Imagine the impact on tens of millions of Russians seeing empty ads on the platform in protest, or even better a statement saying that Meta refuses to make money from Russia at this time but continues service as a censorship-free medium for the public good.

It is disappointing and ironic that the company that has made money in the past from selling ads to Russian-controlled and Russian-sympathetic parties trying to influence voters in Western democracies – including for a US presidential election and the Brexit referendum – didn't have the morality to do something to help democracy when it had the chance.

The company classifies its activities in Russia as an investment, called AliExpress Russia (a joint venture, of which it owns 48%). AliExpress Russia currently controls about 10% of Russia's e-commerce market. Nikkei Asia first reported via an "employee with knowledge on the matter" that "its joint venture in Russia has laid off about 40% of employees since the invasion of Ukraine". This is believed to be a result of Western sanctions' impact on the Russian market, leaving these positions untenable for the company.
Our Moral Verdict
We were not sure whether we should compare Alibaba morally with Amazon, to show the contrast, or with fellow-Chinese company JD.com, to show the moral similarity. One is a comparison of apples and oranges and the other a comparison of two rotten apples. Comparing a company from a democracy with one from a totalitarian state is dramatic but perhaps obvious. We will look at Alibaba both ways. Amazon is one of a handful of companies in the world that has been able to get out of Russia completely. We graded it Full & Complete twelve days after the invasion. Alibaba is at the opposite end of the spectrum. It's a pity that the two companies don't have the same customers because the moral difference might win Amazon a lot of new users. Like JD.com, Alibaba operates in Russia with its strong local partner, with Alibaba owning 48% in AliExpress. Both JD.com and Alibaba ship Chinese and foreign goods into Russia from their own China-based platforms. Both have the Chinese government as cover for their inactions and both stand to gain from Russia's increasing dependence on trade with China. Indeed, we could say one is copying the other, were it not for the fact that inaction has no date to show which failed to act first. The only difference we see is in Exposure level. Alibaba's 48% stake in AliExpress is worth $3.2bn (1.25% of Alibaba's own market value), which translates to a 3.8 Exposure Score. This compares to JD's Exposure level of 2. So, mathematically, we can say that Alibaba is 75% less likely, or at least less motivated, to leave Russia. Unless of course one chooses to be more moral than the other!

In an email statement reported by Reuters, Centrica, the owner of Britain's largest energy supplier British Gas, said it would get out of its gas supply agreements with its Russian counterparts, principally Gazprom, citing "needless loss of lives."

Our Moral Verdict
The company moved fast and beat the rest of its sector by more than a week, getting a Leader of the Pack Bonus of 2 points for Speed. Its statement was framed as an intention, but given the implied feasibility of cutting such contracts, we deducted only one point from Degree for Incompleteness. Centrica's Exposure was low because it could obtain gas elsewhere and pass on increased costs to customers. Meanwhile, in the absence of a unified blockade against Russia, the commodity nature of gas means Centrica's Power is also limited. In the words "needless loss of life", we see implied admonishment of Russia, so we classed it as a Denouncer, but the total Attitude Score was brought down to 5 because we didn't spot any donation to Ukraine. This is a solid and standard withdrawal from Russia, where the company did almost as much as it could.

Our Moral Verdict
Koç is Turkey’s only representative in Fortune’s Global Top 500 companies. It’s a shame, therefore, that it hasn’t even made it off the starting blocks in the world’s slow race to leave Russia. If it disposed of its Russian production facilities, it could rescue Turkey’s reputation in a single shot, from 0% failure to 100% success out of this sample of one.
