According to Universal's company statement, Comcast-owned Universal Pictures, "paused planned theatrical releases in Russia." The next day, Russia lost its retransmission on the Sky platforms that are owned by Comcast, as reported by Broadband TV News. On March 8th, Universal Music Group, owned by Comcast, said via a company statement that it was "suspending all operations in Russia and closing [its] offices there." Comcast Business also said that it is "waiving charges for calls, data, and Global Travel Pass usage to and from Ukraine" for customers from 20 February to 31 May.

Our Moral Verdict
Comcast's Announcement was Full and almost Complete, which is why it didn't get a 10 in Degree. It was quite fast to make its move, but other peers got out first, resulting in 6 for Speed. The company fell behind on Attitude. We didn't spot a statement about the war, so we classed it as a Strong Silent Type. Nor did we monitor any donation to help Ukraine. All of these factors eroded its Moral Rating and brought it down to 65. Breaking with Russia was a good moral-commercial move to make. We calculated the Exposure across the different businesses at 1 compared to the 10 it had in Power. We give mass market entertainment channels and services credit for a high Multiplier Effect because of their Ostracizing impact on large numbers of people locally. The result is that Comcast was looking at a 10 to 1 Return on Sacrifice opportunity and it's no surprise that it made the decision to get out.

Zurich Insurance began by saying it would not renew existing local business, would not take on "new" customers, and would welcome sanctions against Russia. In its 20 May Announcement, it planned to divest its Russian operations to local management, which would act independently and under a different brand. Zurich said it will no longer conduct business operations in Russia. The company also said it condemns the Russian government's aggression toward Ukraine.

Our Moral Verdict

Zurich is proof that slow and steady wins the race. Zurich took its sweet time, accruing Chicken and Pressure Penalties in the interim, landing it a Speed Score of 0. It may have been a tortoise compared to peers such as Generali, which acted two months earlier, but it ran a lot further than the other insurers, all of which seem to be snoozing before the finishing line. Confirming that it has found the counterparty for its divestment in the form of local management is good progress, but of course Zurich needs to confirm the sale has actually been completed. Once done, it will have avoided the mistake of making a Circular Exit to another foreign company that would simply be filling Zurich’s shoes.

Divesting from Russia can be very difficult. But this didn’t stop Zurich, which is in the process of selling its Russian business to local management. It made a textbook Denouncer statement against Russia, and it's refreshing to see a company’s words and actions pointing in the same direction. Zurich is thinking a lot better than Allianz, which is keeping a 49.9% stake in its Russian business.

The race goes not to the swift, but to those who do not cut corners. We’ll give Zurich a medal for breaking ranks with the Swiss companies behaving like their nationality gives them the right to be neutral to whatever is going on in the world. Other Swiss groups, like Nestlé, have dug their heels in during the race out of Russia.

The company discontinued "new capital investments" in Russia, and suspended media, advertising, and promotion. It reduced its Russian activities "significantly" to "focus" on providing "basic health, hygiene and personal care items" needed by Russians who "depend on them", as per its 7 March Announcement.

The company condemned aggression "in any circumstance" and said its hearts go out to "all people who endure the unspeakable toll of war". It said it would support its employees in Russia.

Our Moral Verdict
P&G got almost everything wrong except the timing. It beat Unilever and L’Oréal by 24 hours, for which it got a Leader of the Pack bonus. After that, everything went downhill. Its move was Partial & Incomplete. Partial because it excluded health-related products, as a Confused Humanitarian does, and Incomplete by continuing to support employees, as a Nibbler does. Although it used the word "focus" to describe the continuing products, we don't know if it is focused on the majority of what it had. On top of that, after a Red Herring statement about not making future investments, it had poor Attitude, with a Mealy-Mouther statement that didn't clearly take sides. To make matters worse, it would be a small Sacrifice even if the company withdrew from every product because we estimate Russia at less than 1% of profits. To make matters worse still, this small Exposure compares to a Power Score of 8.5 since P&G employs about 5,000 people in Russia and could have had an Ostracizing effect by pulling so many consumer brands from the shelves. This meant P&G was looking at an 850% Return on Sacrifice. It's a pity it made only a slice of this commercial-moral investment. It needs to cut the rest and sell the factories.

Our Moral Verdict
Let's look at FedEx through its own slogan, but in moral rather than shipment terms. Was its behaviour 'Absolutely, Positively, Overnight'? Let's start with Speed. It actually moved the same day as the invasion, which made it one of the fastest withdrawals in the world, neck-and-neck in fact with its competitor, UPS. The Degree of withdrawal was however not 'absolutely' what we need. Although shipments were cut, operations and infrastructure seemed suspended without us monitoring any plans for them to be sold off. This puts FedEx (and indeed UPS) in the Mothballer category, which drove down FedEx’s Degree Score to 7. Its Attitude could be described not 'positively' but averagely: we calculated the company's donation to Ukraine at only 0.1% of profits, and its statement, talking about "people affected", didn't take sides. In terms of Return on Sacrifice, like UPS, it had a tiny Exposure to Russia, but the combination of its operations inside Russia, with the Multiplier Effect damage that cutting this service can do to trade, means it has a Power level of 5.7. This equates to a 570% ROS. You can see why FedEx didn't waste much time doing the right thing even though it could have done it more Completely.

The company classifies its activities in Russia as an investment, called AliExpress Russia (a joint venture, of which it owns 48%). AliExpress Russia currently controls about 10% of Russia's e-commerce market. Nikkei Asia first reported via an "employee with knowledge on the matter" that "its joint venture in Russia has laid off about 40% of employees since the invasion of Ukraine". This is believed to be a result of Western sanctions' impact on the Russian market, leaving these positions untenable for the company.
Our Moral Verdict
We were not sure whether we should compare Alibaba morally with Amazon, to show the contrast, or with fellow-Chinese company JD.com, to show the moral similarity. One is a comparison of apples and oranges and the other a comparison of two rotten apples. Comparing a company from a democracy with one from a totalitarian state is dramatic but perhaps obvious. We will look at Alibaba both ways. Amazon is one of a handful of companies in the world that has been able to get out of Russia completely. We graded it Full & Complete twelve days after the invasion. Alibaba is at the opposite end of the spectrum. It's a pity that the two companies don't have the same customers because the moral difference might win Amazon a lot of new users. Like JD.com, Alibaba operates in Russia with its strong local partner, with Alibaba owning 48% in AliExpress. Both JD.com and Alibaba ship Chinese and foreign goods into Russia from their own China-based platforms. Both have the Chinese government as cover for their inactions and both stand to gain from Russia's increasing dependence on trade with China. Indeed, we could say one is copying the other, were it not for the fact that inaction has no date to show which failed to act first. The only difference we see is in Exposure level. Alibaba's 48% stake in AliExpress is worth $3.2bn (1.25% of Alibaba's own market value), which translates to a 3.8 Exposure Score. This compares to JD's Exposure level of 2. So, mathematically, we can say that Alibaba is 75% less likely, or at least less motivated, to leave Russia. Unless of course one chooses to be more moral than the other!

According to Reuters, Exor increased its stake in Dutch telecom company Veon, which receives 30% of its revenues from Russia, to 5.08%. Regarding its direct business in Russia, EXOR has stated it will "continue to comply with and implement sanctions". It expressed “solidarity” with “all who are and will be suffering the consequences”.
Our Moral Verdict

Although Exor’s increased indirect investment in Russia through Veon is small, it is a very strange time to be financially supporting a company tied to Russia. This mixed signaling shouldn’t distract from the main point, which is that that it failed to make any withdrawal Announcement. The company’s statement about the situation in Ukraine didn’t take sides, making it what we call a Mealy-Mouther.

We checked Exor’s mission statement which says the company wants to make a “positive contribution to society”. Its Russian behavior shows the statement is nothing but empty words.

Nor did we see any contribution to Ukraine, so, combined with the statement silence, it ended with a zero Attitude Score. Anyway, it did get out and ahead of its peers.

Our Moral Verdict
Bridgestone was at the back of the pack of auto parts producers pulling out of Russia, along with Bosch. It trailed companies such as Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mazda, Magna, ZF Freidrichshafen, Continental, and even Chinese producer Zhejiang Geely. So it was awarded a Chicken Penalty. Under our rating rules, freezing new investments is considered a Red Herring. Anyone would be crazy to be investing in Russia today. Anyway, we are interested in existing businesses being stopped rather than things that haven't happened not happening! Suspending production until further notice doesn't make the grade – and continuing to support employees makes the Announcement doubly incomplete, the former making Bridgestone a Mothballer and the latter making it a Nibbler. Moreover, the company's statement about the war didn't admonish Russia enough, so it was also classified as a Mealy-Mouther. Bridgestone needs to pull out of Russia properly and not leave us in limbo any longer.

Google first paused ads from state-funded Russian entities on 28 February, before pausing all Russian ads a few days later (3 March). It is also part of initiatives to help war-afflicted Ukrainians, such as rolling out a rapid Air Raid Alerts system for Android phones in Ukraine, helping those affected get to safety. It has not removed Russian access to free services (such as Google search and Youtube), and this is in alignment with the idea that big tech corporations can help to prevent the spread of misinformation and Russian propaganda. These actions were in response to the Russian "invasion" of Ukraine, which it described as "a tragedy".  Bloomberg also reports it operates an office in Russia, whose staff have been relocated (mostly to Dubai, where the company has a large presence).

Our Moral Verdict

The contrast between Alphabet's Google and Meta's Facebook is brought alive by our rating rules being imposed on both of their stories. Both companies look like they are doing a lot, but Alphabet comes out as the clear moral winner. Both companies quickly decided to cut advertising from Russian state media. Meta basically left it at that. Alphabet, however, had within five days announced it would cut all Russian advertising.

Rated on the basis of its deeper withdrawal, Alphabet got a lower Speed score including a Chicken Penalty (it was slower than Meta also for the initial move against Russian state-controlled media). However, we consider Alphabet's withdrawal Full & Complete with a 10 score for Degree, compared to Meta's score of just 2. Also, Alphabet was a Denouncer of Russia, having the gut to use the word "invasion" which the Russian government hates, compared to Meta's Mealy-Mouther statement. At the end of the day, Google isn't making money from Russian advertising and isn't helping the Russian economy as a result.

Alphabet has an extreme Power level, just as Meta had, because of both economic power by being able to disconnect a major advertising medium from Russian companies, but also because of the Ostracizing effect of being able to let tens of millions of Russians know that a Russian company is persona non grata, for which we gave both companies 10 in Power. However, doing the right thing was less expensive for Alphabet than Meta, which may explain why Meta has failed to do so. Alphabet's Russian revenues were 0.4% versus 1.8% for Meta. This de minimus Exposure of Alphabet put it in the enviable position of looking at a 1,000% Return on Sacrifice opportunity. Either this moral-commercial trade-off was irresistible to Alphabet, or it simply never contemplated its own small Sacrifice and just chose to do the right thing.
