In November 2019, TJX invested $225 million for a 25% non-controlling, minority interest in privately held fashion retailer Familia. It has "committed" to divest and said it will sell its equity at a loss. Additionally, it said it has "instructed" its buyers globally to stop buying merchandise from Russia and Belarus. It added: "At TJX, we unite with others around the world in our condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and deplore the senseless military aggression that is killing, injuring, and displacing innocent people."
Date of Announcement: 3 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
TJX looks sincere about getting out of Russia by instructing suppliers not to source there and making a commitment to sell its investment in Familia. The Degree Score of 6 reflects it being an Asset Sloth because there was no timeframe given for the sale. Its statement against Russia was a picture-perfect Denouncer, with its Attitude Score being brought down by no obvious donation to Ukraine. On Speed, it got a Leader of Pack bonus for making its move before peer companies such as Alimentation Couche-Tard and CK Hutchison. We are looking forward to a report which states it got out of Familia.

Honda halted exports to Russia. The company made a €1m contribution and said it "sincerely wishes that the current emergency situation will come to an end as soon as possible and that peace will be restored all around the world".
Date of Announcement: 2 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
The 2 March date looks good, but it was worded as an unconvincing, PR type of do-good-feel-good statement. Not a word of criticism towards Russia, and fuzzier than most of the Mealy-Mouthers we have monitored. Who, after all, would not want world peace? Also, the statement came after a Domino Exit had already been unleashed in the sector by Mercedes-Benz (formerly Daimler), after which GM and BMW followed one another with about a day's lag. Finally, Honda turned up. As a result, we gave it a Chicken Penalty which took its Speed Score down from 8 to 6. Moreover, it was an easy decision for the company: it was only exporting to Russia and the action involved little Sacrifice compared to some of the others, based on the tiny fraction of revenues from Russia. Compared to this de minimus Exposure level, we calculated the withdrawal impact of a large foreign brand like Honda was five times greater than the pain to the company. Honda should have gone for this 500% Return on Sacrifice opportunity earlier and become the moral leader of the sector at a very low cost.

The company said it had "suspended substantially all" of its "sales, distribution and service activities in Russia and Belarus" referring to "conditions" in Eastern Europe. It also said it hoped to see a "peaceful resolution", and its thoughts were with the "refugees".
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
Honeywell's statement included three words, "suspended substantially all", to describe its withdrawal from Russia, attaching them to some business categories covered. From this, we can't be sure exactly what is going on (for example the status of its manufacturing activities and investments in the country), but we can say that some businesses have been carved out, which makes it a Partial move. Also, suspending puts it into the Mothballer category. The company lost points on Speed because of a Chicken Penalty for being behind Samsung Electronics. It also got a zero score on Attitude: the reason for its action didn't directly admonish Russia or properly address the issue, and we didn't monitor any donation to Ukraine. It gets a lot of Power from being in a sector with high impact, on top of employing 1,000 people in Russia. We hope Honeywell will get out fully and completely, and be more clear on its business dealings with Russia.

Our Moral Verdict
China's second largest car producer (3.5 million cars/year) needs to stop selling cars to Russia and join Western auto producers in cutting Russia off. The other major Chinese automakers (SAIC, Dongfeng and Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group) have also continued working with Russia and say very little (apart from GAIG). Each wields psychological and strategic Power over Russia which can be realized with such an action, beyond its own small economic impact.

It has "suspended" shipment of retail products to customers based in Russia and Belarus and will "no longer be accepting new Russia and Belarus-based AWS sign-ups and Amazon third-party sellers." The statement also reported "suspending access to Prime Video for customers based in Russia", and said it had stopped taking orders for New World, its only video game directly sold in Russia. As for the reason, it said, "We have a long-standing policy of not doing business with the Russian government" and it expressed "horror and concern" about the situation.
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

This is a company that has prided itself on not getting its hands dirty with Russia, specifically citing its long-standing policy of working with the Russian market from the outside. Given this pre-invasion distancing policy, it is surprising it took the company so long to make its move. Peers in online businesses moved earlier (Meta on 25 February and Alphabet on 4 March). For this delay, Amazon's Speed Score suffered a Chicken Penalty of 2. It also suffered a Pressure Penalty of 2 for moving after it received a letter from the Ukrainian government asking it to cut off the AWS Cloud Services in Russia. Also, the wording of Amazon's statement (referring to historical policies and not ascribing its "horror" to the perpetrator) puts it in the Mealy-Mouther category. If it has never wanted to associate with the Russian government, why can't it admonish the invasion properly?

Meanwhile, it made a big deal of the contributions to Ukraine, but as a percentage of its profits these are de minimis. For all these reasons, this without-excuse company could have got a rating of 100 instead of 62. What's really important, however, is that Amazon did the right thing and delivered impact. Our calculations show an Exposure level of only 1, partly on account of the sheer size of Amazon, in contrast to a Power level of 10. This meant the company was looking at a morally/commercially irresistible Return on Sacrifice opportunity of 1,000%. Amazon made the right decision even if it was a no-brainer.

According to the company's Announcement, it took the decision to "temporarily" close its "own" stores and directly operated counters, as well as "suspending industrial and national media investments", and closing its "own brand" e-commerce sites in Russia. It said it was "still taking care" of its 2,500 Russian employees. It pledged donations of up to €5 million with the words, "strongly condemn the Russian invasion."
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
This is a case of a company doing something by half measure and then only to some degree. L'Oréal has stopped is retailing-facing businesses, but the Announcement doesn't close off its product sales through other people's stores. On top of what we define as Half-Hearted, it said the decision was "temporary". Also, it is classified as a Nibbler for continuing to support its 2,500 employees. All these deficiencies continue to feed the Russian economy. The statement wasn't helpful, explaining what the company temporarily did rather than what it didn't (manufacturing in Russia), and it included a Red Herring about not making future investments. What we need to know is when it will stop what it is doing, rather than that it will not do what it isn’t yet doing! L'Oréal waited to make its move until after P&G, for which we gave it a Chicken Penalty on Speed. Unlike many Confused Humanitarian peer companies in the consumer product sector, it resisted the temptation to say it was producing essential goods. Indeed, that would be a stretch for a brand associated more with cosmetic than pure health, and luxury rather than staple. L'Oréal might have been furious to see P&G making “personal care" one of its carve-outs. Against all of this, L'Oréal strangely was a Denouncer, with a bold statement against Russia. This might make propagandized Russian consumers less likely to want to touch L'Oréal products still on the shelves. Like Unilever, this is either a case of hypocrisy or one part of the company thinks Russia is bad and the other thinks it is fine to do business there.

Sysco has been an importer from Russia, with no other Activities. It reported that it is finding alternative suppliers in a clear statement of disconnection with Russia.
Date of Announcement: 17 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
Not an interesting story. This giant company is only a small importer from Russia which was easily able to quit and switch its sourcing elsewhere. To its credit, it moved quite fast, and we gave it a Leader of Pack bonus for being ahead of its sector. We didn't spot any comment about Russia or the war, so it is classed as a Strong Silent Type. Nor did we see any contribution to Ukraine, so, combined with the statement silence, it ended with a zero Attitude Score. Anyway, it did get out and ahead of its peers.

Huawei’s Ukraine office Facebook page, posted on 1 March, said "we condemn the devastating scale and losses". No statement was found regarding the parent company's position. On 9 March, it was revealed that two of the company's UK directors had just resigned, citing the group's silence on the matter. At the time of the invasion, the company had multiple Activities in Russia, including sales, research, and involvement in Russia's networking infrastructure. MSN reported on 28 March that the company is "still evaluating its response to Western sanctions on Russia". It has since been reported on 11 April to have suspended new orders in Russia, according to The Moscow Times. Business Insider reported on 13 April from two Russian media sources that Huawei has "stopped taking on new contracts" to supply equipment "since March".
Date of Announcement: 11 April 2022
Our Moral Verdict

This reminds us of a soap opera with good and bad characters. In this case, you've got the person you don't want to be, the hero and the victim. No one needs guess which character the Chinese parent company plays.

The media reports paint different pictures about what exactly Huawei is doing about Russia. One thing is clear: it is not helping to clarify all of the speculation and ensuing confusion. The only parent company report we could find (reported by MSN) didn't even refer to the invasion or war but only to Western action ("still evaluating its response to Western sanctions on Russia"). Perhaps it should be evaluating its own sanctions on Russia! It is a typical Chinese anti-Western statement, which simultaneously avoids the elephant in the room. We are nevertheless giving credit for a Partial and Incomplete with a 1.7 Degree Score, very Partial and very Incomplete, based on balancing all the information in this story which has got more shades of red than a sunset, and recognizing that there were some media reports the company had furloughed staff and wasn't taking any new orders. We gave it a low Speed Score, first because of the late date but also because Huawei got a Chicken Penalty for not moving till after Cisco Systems and Ericsson did.

This is a rich story of intrigue, unconfirmed government pressure or influence, and if so, compliance with it at the top of the company (for fear of its leaders' careers or perhaps worse). The story is also one of soul-searching by employees living in a democracy that outweighed their financial interests to the point they could no longer stomach being apologists for a company influenced and admired by the Chinese regime, and finally employees who are victims of a war so wrong that it caused them no hesitation to speak out. It should be a lesson to corporations throughout the world acting immorally that employees may have a very different view and show moral courage that the company can't comprehend.

It announced that it "is" suspending exports to Russia and pausing its Russian manufacturing "for the time being". This excludes certain products, services and support that are "indispensable to the daily lives of people". The company iterated its support for Ukrainians amidst "this conflict" and said it donated "approximately 3 million U.S. dollars" in an earlier statement on 8 March.
Date of Announcement: 10 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
A good case of 'Shades of Red'. Hitachi said it was cutting exports and ceasing manufacturing, but it is also a Confused Humanitarian for mentioning it was making carve-outs and, what’s worse, without being precise about what they were. Moreover, it was clear the company is only committing to stopping whatever it is stopping on temporary basis, which makes it a Mothballer. It made a weak Leadership statement that didn't take sides and the donation to Ukraine was only about 0.06% of profits (or 12% of what it made from Russia in a year). In Speed, the company was behind Japanese rival Panasonic, for which we gave it a Chicken Penalty. We think its behavior is even more disappointing compared to the Sacrifice we calculate it would be making if it did everything properly. We calculate Exposure at 1.3 based on Russia accounting for 0.5% of profits. Comparing that to the company's high Power (indeed the company itself accepts this by speaking about Russian dependency on its products), if it had done the right thing, it would have achieved a 600% plus Return on Sacrifice in this commercial-moral equation.

Itochu imports from Russia and owns a stake in the Russian project Sakhalin-1. According to Reuters, it declined to comment on its plans for this investment. We have not monitored an Announcement.
Our Moral Verdict

Itochu is like an identical, immoral triplet of Mitsubishi and Mitsui: all are in Sakhalin projects, and all are under pressure to make a moral choice. None of them have made an Announcement, and none of them look good compared to fellow Japanese company Marubeni, which is also a Sakhalin investor. At least, in Marubeni’s case, the CEO disagreed with Japan’s government policy, denounced Russia, and said it would not do any new business with Russia.

If the immoral triplets want to feel even worse about their behaviour, they should compare themselves to non-Japanese companies in the West. Exxon Mobil also owns a stake in Sakhalin, is trying to sell out and has declared force majeure. With such low Exposure, we really wonder whether Itochu shareholders are any richer as a result!

Notice

The entire website and our rating methodology are based on a company’s involvement with Russia being measured by Announcements.

We measure this against the ways a company can be involved with Russia through its Activities.

Please also be aware of the Scope of our research, limitations due to Incomplete Information, our Rating Methodology , and our policy relating to any Errors, Omissions & Corrections.

Also, be aware that brands carry the rating information of the company that owns, controls or is associated with them as defined more precisely in Brands Displayed.

The basis of “Rating as of” date is explained here.

Want to give us information on a company?

We will be extending our service from the top 200 companies in the world to the top 500. We are interested in information about their continuing involvement with or in Russia from reliable published sources.

Want to suggest a correction to your company?

If you represent a corporation and feel it is inaccurately or otherwise unfairly presented, you should email us in the window below a scan of a document signed by a director of the ultimate parent company (“Parent”) we listed on the site, stating your position about our information as of the ‘Rating as of’ date listed below our information providing a clear factual statement in support of your disagreement in such a manner and in sufficient detail that we will be able to re-rate the company in accordance with our Rating Methodology. If you do not provide sufficient detail, we will not consider re-rating and do not have time to engage in discussions but will solely consider sufficiently comprehensive information via this process.
