In November 2019, TJX invested $225 million for a 25% non-controlling, minority interest in privately held fashion retailer Familia. It has "committed" to divest and said it will sell its equity at a loss. Additionally, it said it has "instructed" its buyers globally to stop buying merchandise from Russia and Belarus. It added: "At TJX, we unite with others around the world in our condemnation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and deplore the senseless military aggression that is killing, injuring, and displacing innocent people."
Date of Announcement: 3 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
TJX looks sincere about getting out of Russia by instructing suppliers not to source there and making a commitment to sell its investment in Familia. The Degree Score of 6 reflects it being an Asset Sloth because there was no timeframe given for the sale. Its statement against Russia was a picture-perfect Denouncer, with its Attitude Score being brought down by no obvious donation to Ukraine. On Speed, it got a Leader of Pack bonus for making its move before peer companies such as Alimentation Couche-Tard and CK Hutchison. We are looking forward to a report which states it got out of Familia.

Marubeni has had extensive links to Russia over past decades, such as commodities trading and infrastructure projects. One notable investment is its 20% stake in Russia's high-profile offshore joint oil venture project Sakhalin-I. According to Bloomberg, Japan's prime minister confirmed Japanese businesses will not pull out of the Sakhalin-1 offshore joint oil venture with Russia as the country's policy is "not to withdraw", on 1 April.

The company itself stated it will be freezing all new transactions in Russia and will seek to terminate existing deals as much as possible on 21 April. It said there will not be "any new Russia-related business" and it is "negotiating to divest from existing transactions".

On 6 May, Reuters reported that CEO Masumi Kakinoki said the business wanted to exit Sakhalin-I due to the war situation but was not doing so in accordance with government policy.

Date of Announcement: 16 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

This is a rare case of a company that wanted to do the right thing but was held back by its government’s determination to keep interests in Sakhalin. The Japanese Prime Minister said it is not Japan’s policy to withdraw from Sakhalin-II, but this does not legally tie Marubeni’s hands. Respecting your government may be a good thing in a democracy, but we believe there are higher moral callings.

It is unclear whether Marubeni is genuinely concerned for Ukraine or if it is shedding crocodile tears. Nevertheless, we commend Marubeni for what it has said: its statements since the invasion deserve its high-scoring Russia Denouncer status.

Words, however, are only one part of our rating. Even if the CEO genuinely had good intentions, the fact is that the company hasn’t taken any useful action. That makes it a Big Talker by our rules.

Mr. Kakinoki, every day that the invasion continues should give you more courage to practice what you preach. You can be the unshackled hero, free of your bonds.

According to the company's Announcement, it took the decision to "temporarily" close its "own" stores and directly operated counters, as well as "suspending industrial and national media investments", and closing its "own brand" e-commerce sites in Russia. It said it was "still taking care" of its 2,500 Russian employees. It pledged donations of up to €5 million with the words, "strongly condemn the Russian invasion."
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
This is a case of a company doing something by half measure and then only to some degree. L'Oréal has stopped is retailing-facing businesses, but the Announcement doesn't close off its product sales through other people's stores. On top of what we define as Half-Hearted, it said the decision was "temporary". Also, it is classified as a Nibbler for continuing to support its 2,500 employees. All these deficiencies continue to feed the Russian economy. The statement wasn't helpful, explaining what the company temporarily did rather than what it didn't (manufacturing in Russia), and it included a Red Herring about not making future investments. What we need to know is when it will stop what it is doing, rather than that it will not do what it isn’t yet doing! L'Oréal waited to make its move until after P&G, for which we gave it a Chicken Penalty on Speed. Unlike many Confused Humanitarian peer companies in the consumer product sector, it resisted the temptation to say it was producing essential goods. Indeed, that would be a stretch for a brand associated more with cosmetic than pure health, and luxury rather than staple. L'Oréal might have been furious to see P&G making “personal care" one of its carve-outs. Against all of this, L'Oréal strangely was a Denouncer, with a bold statement against Russia. This might make propagandized Russian consumers less likely to want to touch L'Oréal products still on the shelves. Like Unilever, this is either a case of hypocrisy or one part of the company thinks Russia is bad and the other thinks it is fine to do business there.

It announced that it "is" suspending exports to Russia and pausing its Russian manufacturing "for the time being". This excludes certain products, services and support that are "indispensable to the daily lives of people". The company iterated its support for Ukrainians amidst "this conflict" and said it donated "approximately 3 million U.S. dollars" in an earlier statement on 8 March.
Date of Announcement: 10 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
A good case of 'Shades of Red'. Hitachi said it was cutting exports and ceasing manufacturing, but it is also a Confused Humanitarian for mentioning it was making carve-outs and, what’s worse, without being precise about what they were. Moreover, it was clear the company is only committing to stopping whatever it is stopping on temporary basis, which makes it a Mothballer. It made a weak Leadership statement that didn't take sides and the donation to Ukraine was only about 0.06% of profits (or 12% of what it made from Russia in a year). In Speed, the company was behind Japanese rival Panasonic, for which we gave it a Chicken Penalty. We think its behavior is even more disappointing compared to the Sacrifice we calculate it would be making if it did everything properly. We calculate Exposure at 1.3 based on Russia accounting for 0.5% of profits. Comparing that to the company's high Power (indeed the company itself accepts this by speaking about Russian dependency on its products), if it had done the right thing, it would have achieved a 600% plus Return on Sacrifice in this commercial-moral equation.

No Announcement was found about the company's plans for discontinuing its car and van exports to Russia. On 24 March, the FT reported that the company has been planning to increase its exports to Russia.
Our Moral Verdict
China's largest car producer (5 million cars/year) needs to stop selling cars and vans to Russia and join Western auto producers in cutting Russia off.  The other major Chinese auto makers (Dongfeng, FAW and Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group) have also continued working with Russia while saying very little (apart from GAIG).  Each wields psychological and strategic Power over Russia which can be realized with such an action, beyond its own small economic impact.

We haven't seen an Announcement from Tesla. It exports its vehicles and provides support services in the Russian market, and, according to invoices obtained by CNBC, has bought aluminum from Russian giant Rusal. Indeed, it has been subject to a Twitter campaign calling for it to be boycotted for its Russian Activities and inaction, including requests for it to deactivate Russian cars. It has offered to charge electric vehicles at no cost in the afflicted region around Ukraine to help refugees displaced by the war, and to keep paying staff who were recalled to fight for Ukraine. It also opened a satellite to support Ukraine’s internet access at no cost. CEO Elon Musk tweeted, "Hold Strong Ukraine" and mocked people for supporting Ukraine with memes. He has also refused requests not to carry Russian state media on Tesla's satellites.
Our Moral Verdict
Tesla has disappointed us. Stopping sales of Tesla in Russia and confirming it would no longer import aluminum would have been a start. But the real lost opportunity is that it could 'unplug' the existing cars in the country through its Supercharger system. This would be a bold action since it would upend the company's policy of proactive customer service through a proactive customer 'disservice'. You can see why such a brand would not want its customers to see how dependent their expensive cars are or how easily they could be played with. However, the rules change when we need to undermine Putin, and Tesla's CEO is famously unafraid of taking stands on a huge range of topics when he's inspired. This would have triggered a Ripple Effect, not just inside Russia but across the world, that a Western entrepreneur could simply 'switch off' cars in Russia from his desk and this is just the sort of shock Russia needs. What a lost opportunity, over and above any economic effects of these expensive cars becoming useless in the Russian economy. The company should cease its hypocrisy of doing business with a country that is harming another that it is then trying to help. It's an Immoral Vicious Cycle that indirectly needs more reparations for more business, the profits of one being used to pay for the other. Leaving aside whether Tesla is making more money from Russia than it is spending to help Ukraine, it's a sick self-feeding cycle to be involved in.

Mercedes-Benz (formerly Daimler) said "it would freeze its business activities in Russia with immediate effect", according to Reuters. The company also said it will suspend the export of passenger cars and vans to Russia. The Financial Times reported Mercedes-Benz was trying to divest a 15% stake in its Kamaz joint venture, for which it supplies parts, but by 24 March Reuters said it was no longer in talks.
Date of Announcement: 28 February 2022
Our Moral Verdict
Mercedes-Benz made its Announcement neck-and-neck with GM four days after the invasion. It was a much tougher decision for Mercedes because GM had only exports to worry about. Mercedes-Benz not only exported cars and vans to Russia, but also produced cars and trucks in the country. It also owns 15% of a joint venture with Kamaz. Its policy seems to be to stop everything but make no commitments for the future such as the permanent sale of facilities and all assets. Even its reported attempts to sell this 15% stake have apparently been dropped. So, it's a mixed picture: a Full & Complete withdrawal of exports, a Partial leaver because of the lack of commitment on Kamaz, and a Mothballer for its standalone production plans. One light is still on, the rest of the lights have been turned off but may be switched back on, along with exports as soon as the situation changes. These actions impact Russia economically and psychologically in the meanwhile, but it's not the killer blow that is needed. Like other groups making moves about manufacturing in Russia, it played the same Mothballing game, which diminished its Degree Score. Mercedes-Benz's package of moves makes a bigger splash than it really is and looks especially impressive when coupled with the lightning-fast timing. The scale of the group would make the pain manageable for the company, but that doesn't mean the company was willing to bite the bullet and pull out completely.

There are conflicting media reports about whether Lenovo, which owns Motorola, is still operating in Russia. Belarusian media outlet Nexta tweeted that Lenovo “suspended shipments of products to Russia." On 6 May, the Wall Street Journal said the company had quietly left the Russian market.
Date of Announcement: 6 May 2022
Our Moral Verdict
This is the strange case of a Chinese company that has apparently made some effort to withdraw from Russia. Less strange, is that the company said very little. We don't give companies much credit for actions they are not disclosing themselves where we need to rely solely on indirect reports from the field or third parties (only 2 points in Degree are applicable). It is rated based on a Wall Street Journal report in May that the company had quietly withdrawn. As a result, it gets low Degree and Speed scores. Moreover, for remaining quiet and disclosing no donation to Ukraine, it gets 0 for Attitude. All of this produced a 0 moral rating. It has a lot of Power in Russia leading to an 800% Return on Sacrifice based on its de minimus Exposure. So, it is a pity the way the company decided to take action undermined its moral rating: it would have been nice to report that Lenovo was leading Chinese corporations in a moral direction in terms of transparency, speed and spirit. That said, it has a major Strategic Disturbance effect. When even Chinese companies start withdrawing, albeit discreetly, it can't go unnoticed by Putin.

Notice

The entire website and our rating methodology are based on a company’s involvement with Russia being measured by Announcements.

We measure this against the ways a company can be involved with Russia through its Activities.

Please also be aware of the Scope of our research, limitations due to Incomplete Information, our Rating Methodology , and our policy relating to any Errors, Omissions & Corrections.

Also, be aware that brands carry the rating information of the company that owns, controls or is associated with them as defined more precisely in Brands Displayed.

The basis of “Rating as of” date is explained here.

Want to give us information on a company?

We will be extending our service from the top 200 companies in the world to the top 500. We are interested in information about their continuing involvement with or in Russia from reliable published sources.

Want to suggest a correction to your company?

If you represent a corporation and feel it is inaccurately or otherwise unfairly presented, you should email us in the window below a scan of a document signed by a director of the ultimate parent company (“Parent”) we listed on the site, stating your position about our information as of the ‘Rating as of’ date listed below our information providing a clear factual statement in support of your disagreement in such a manner and in sufficient detail that we will be able to re-rate the company in accordance with our Rating Methodology. If you do not provide sufficient detail, we will not consider re-rating and do not have time to engage in discussions but will solely consider sufficiently comprehensive information via this process.
