Saint-Gobain has stopped exports and imports with Russia and Belarus. It said, "Local activities are now operating at a minimum and in autonomous mode to maintain the employment of employees and to mitigate the consequences of this war for them and their families, in accordance with our corporate social responsibility".

The company also stated that all "investment projects" had been canceled. In addition to showing "solidarity" with Ukraine, it said, "The group strongly condemns this war."

Date of Announcement: 22 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

Saint-Gobain is a Confused Humanitarian, in this case on behalf of Russian employees and families, citing social responsibility in its company policies as the reason it would continue production in Russia. Social responsibility needs to extend to the impact you have on society at large and not just employees. The use of the words "as a minimum" to describe ongoing production is vague. It also threw in a Red Herring about not making future investments.

Continuing some level of production, regardless of the excuse, gets a low credit in Degree, which was brought up a bit for completely withdrawing from exports and imports. The company was also slow to do so little, following CRH and Holcim by nearly three weeks, for which it got a Chicken Penalty.

This too-little-too-late company at least condemned the war, which qualified it for Denouncer status, but the contrast between the poor action and strong words put it into the Big Talker category. We calculated its Exposure at only 1.3 which makes all of its efforts to explain itself even less understandable.

No Announcement was found about the company's plans for discontinuing its car and van exports to Russia. On 24 March, the FT reported that the company has been planning to increase its exports to Russia.
Our Moral Verdict
China's largest car producer (5 million cars/year) needs to stop selling cars and vans to Russia and join Western auto producers in cutting Russia off.  The other major Chinese auto makers (Dongfeng, FAW and Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group) have also continued working with Russia while saying very little (apart from GAIG).  Each wields psychological and strategic Power over Russia which can be realized with such an action, beyond its own small economic impact.

The company discontinued "new capital investments" in Russia, and suspended media, advertising, and promotion. It reduced its Russian activities "significantly" to "focus" on providing "basic health, hygiene and personal care items" needed by Russians who "depend on them", as per its 7 March Announcement.

The company condemned aggression "in any circumstance" and said its hearts go out to "all people who endure the unspeakable toll of war". It said it would support its employees in Russia.

Date of Announcement: 7 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
P&G got almost everything wrong except the timing. It beat Unilever and L’Oréal by 24 hours, for which it got a Leader of the Pack bonus. After that, everything went downhill. Its move was Partial & Incomplete. Partial because it excluded health-related products, as a Confused Humanitarian does, and Incomplete by continuing to support employees, as a Nibbler does. Although it used the word "focus" to describe the continuing products, we don't know if it is focused on the majority of what it had. On top of that, after a Red Herring statement about not making future investments, it had poor Attitude, with a Mealy-Mouther statement that didn't clearly take sides. To make matters worse, it would be a small Sacrifice even if the company withdrew from every product because we estimate Russia at less than 1% of profits. To make matters worse still, this small Exposure compares to a Power Score of 8.5 since P&G employs about 5,000 people in Russia and could have had an Ostracizing effect by pulling so many consumer brands from the shelves. This meant P&G was looking at an 850% Return on Sacrifice. It's a pity it made only a slice of this commercial-moral investment. It needs to cut the rest and sell the factories.

On 3 March, Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's Vice Prime Minister said, ''I appeal to you with a request to temporarily stop supplying Samsung Services and products to the Russian Federation, including blocking access to the Samsung Pay, Samsung-Galaxy Store and Samsung Shop". A few days later, the company said it will suspend product shipments to Russia and stated that its thoughts are with "everyone who has been impacted". On 21 March, it was reported to have temporarily suspended the operation of its TV factory in Kaluga earlier that month, as reported on The Elec, a Korean electronics industry media publication.

Our Moral Verdict
Samsung was a case of one step back and one step forward. It made its move after the Ukrainian government called for it to take action, for which we gave it a Pressure Penalty. However, when it did move, it was ahead of Honeywell, Sony, Schneider Electric and LG Electronics, for which we gave it a Leader of Pack Bonus. Its Degree Score fell short because the Announcement didn't cover manufacturing at the time (we rated the company on this Announcement, and therefore it received the benefit of the earlier Speed score). Besides, we consider closing exports a major part of what it needed to do. It didn't do so well in Attitude: no direct admonishment of the war, and a donation to Ukraine too small to get a score from us, leaving it with only 2.5 points. With an Exposure level of 3.8 and Power of 10, it was looking at a 260% Return on Sacrifice, so its move was smart and welcome.

According to the company's Announcement, it took the decision to "temporarily" close its "own" stores and directly operated counters, as well as "suspending industrial and national media investments", and closing its "own brand" e-commerce sites in Russia. It said it was "still taking care" of its 2,500 Russian employees. It pledged donations of up to €5 million with the words, "strongly condemn the Russian invasion."
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
This is a case of a company doing something by half measure and then only to some degree. L'Oréal has stopped is retailing-facing businesses, but the Announcement doesn't close off its product sales through other people's stores. On top of what we define as Half-Hearted, it said the decision was "temporary". Also, it is classified as a Nibbler for continuing to support its 2,500 employees. All these deficiencies continue to feed the Russian economy. The statement wasn't helpful, explaining what the company temporarily did rather than what it didn't (manufacturing in Russia), and it included a Red Herring about not making future investments. What we need to know is when it will stop what it is doing, rather than that it will not do what it isn’t yet doing! L'Oréal waited to make its move until after P&G, for which we gave it a Chicken Penalty on Speed. Unlike many Confused Humanitarian peer companies in the consumer product sector, it resisted the temptation to say it was producing essential goods. Indeed, that would be a stretch for a brand associated more with cosmetic than pure health, and luxury rather than staple. L'Oréal might have been furious to see P&G making “personal care" one of its carve-outs. Against all of this, L'Oréal strangely was a Denouncer, with a bold statement against Russia. This might make propagandized Russian consumers less likely to want to touch L'Oréal products still on the shelves. Like Unilever, this is either a case of hypocrisy or one part of the company thinks Russia is bad and the other thinks it is fine to do business there.

The company stated its concern for the "situation" in Ukraine and said that it hoped the world would return to peace and security. It said it "in principle decided to suspend transactions with Russia", due to "economic, logistical and other practical challenges". However, the company's website (translated from Russian) stated "Panasonic Rus continues to work, provide service and other support to our partners and customers in the region."
Date of Announcement: 4 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
Panasonic moved fast but as soon as it opened its mouth it started saying the wrong things. The head office made a wishy-washy statement about what it might do and spoke about suspending "transactions" while it avoided mentioning the elephant in the room as the reason, for which we have it a Coward Penalty. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, its Russian site reassured customers that it would continue operating. If the West couldn't read Russian and Russians couldn't read English, everyone could be happy with the company. Keeping servicing products is a pity. It really sends a strong signal to Russia when things the country has purchased slowly stop working, and have to be manufactured and paid for again. Panasonic does get a Leader of Pack Bonus for being the first major electronics/electricals group to make a move, beating Hitachi by six days, albeit that it wasn't what we were hoping for.

Saudi Aramco relies on extraction technologies from Russian Novomet, in which it has a 31% stake. Aramco is 98.5%-owned by Saudi Arabia. According to the Financial Times, its energy minister signaled on 22 May that it would stand by Russia as a member of OPEC+ and said the “world should appreciate the value” of the producers’ alliance.

Saudi Aramco itself has not made any withdrawal Announcement, but CEO Amin Nasser described the invasion as a "tragic situation unfolding in Ukraine”.

Our Moral Verdict

We have given Aramco a low rating for keeping its Novomet stake because our ratings are based on withdrawing from existing business with Russia. However, if our methodology extended to what damage a company could do beyond withdrawing its own business, we would deduct a further 100 points in this case: Aramco – subject of course to the permission of the Saudi kingdom – could have stopped the oil price raise that is helping Russia offset the impact of boycotts and sanctions that we are advocating. Few companies in the world could so powerfully close the loop on Russia.

If anyone thinks this is beyond its power or without precedent, don’t forget that Saudi Arabia used such a strategy to try and put the U.S. shale industry out of business in 2014.

It’s sad that Aramco uses such power for profit and not morality. Indeed, the regime that controls the company and is accused of being behind the murder of a dissident journalist in its Istanbul embassy, is hardly one from which we can expect any moral satisfaction. Asking Prince Mohammed Bin Salman to find Putin abhorrent would be like asking him to engage in hypocrisy. It looks like Aramco isn’t going to be the secret bullet to undermine the Russian economy.

Date of Announcement: 16 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
This is a strange story of a Retroactive – saying that you decided at a significantly earlier date to do what you are disclosing only now. This technique is usually deployed by companies embarrassed for having waited so long. In the case of this Chinese group, the Retroactive applies to a decision that is purported to have been made prior to the invasion, which is what makes it particularly interesting. Perhaps it was the only way for CK to do the right thing and not get into trouble with the Chinese government – a government eager to avoid siding with the West against Russia and notorious for dictating what its companies do. We suspect China has instructed state-controlled groups, and even others, not to make overt counter-reactions to the invasion. The solution may be to say you had already decided to do so before the invasion, allowing everyone to save face. In fact, how else could a company finesse such a conflict. There’s no surprise that CK passed no comment on the invasion. Of course, it is possible it did indeed decide months before and just forgot to mention what is quite a significant event. In our rating, we are giving CK credit from the date the action was disclosed since backdating the Speed Score seems a little too generous in the circumstances. If we were making a movie, this could inspire a great cloak-and-dagger plot – a climate of censorship or hardcore censorship mixed with corporate morality mixed with corporate self-preservation to deliver the moral outcome in an ingenious way, against the backdrop of repercussions from the command state. Back to reality and the rating: we calculated the company had an Exposure Score of 1 compared to a Power score of 8.6 (an irresistible 860% Return on Sacrifice). This comes from the Multiplier Effects of the sectors it is involved in, as well as the fact that any withdrawal from Russia by a Chinese company must send the alarm bells ringing in the Kremlin even louder than the church bells of St. Basil's Cathedral opposite. Indeed, the rarity of a Chinese company leaving Russia is extreme. A whisper in a silent room doesn't go unnoticed at the Moral Rating Agency, even if had been backdated to be quieter still. There is a lot of reading between the lines here, but we say well done CK in what is probably a minefield Western companies don't have to dance on.

Notice

The entire website and our rating methodology are based on a company’s involvement with Russia being measured by Announcements.

We measure this against the ways a company can be involved with Russia through its Activities.

Please also be aware of the Scope of our research, limitations due to Incomplete Information, our Rating Methodology , and our policy relating to any Errors, Omissions & Corrections.

Also, be aware that brands carry the rating information of the company that owns, controls or is associated with them as defined more precisely in Brands Displayed.

The basis of “Rating as of” date is explained here.

Want to give us information on a company?

We will be extending our service from the top 200 companies in the world to the top 500. We are interested in information about their continuing involvement with or in Russia from reliable published sources.

Want to suggest a correction to your company?

If you represent a corporation and feel it is inaccurately or otherwise unfairly presented, you should email us in the window below a scan of a document signed by a director of the ultimate parent company (“Parent”) we listed on the site, stating your position about our information as of the ‘Rating as of’ date listed below our information providing a clear factual statement in support of your disagreement in such a manner and in sufficient detail that we will be able to re-rate the company in accordance with our Rating Methodology. If you do not provide sufficient detail, we will not consider re-rating and do not have time to engage in discussions but will solely consider sufficiently comprehensive information via this process.
