According to Reuters, the company is "discontinuing" local production and has "halted" the export of cars to Russia. A day later, Interfax reported that BMW is "halting the manufacturing of its automobiles at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad", and Russian news agency TASS said its local partner Avtotor intends to retain the employees after BMW's withdrawal. The company said, "We condemn the aggression against Ukraine".

Our Moral Verdict
This is a bold and fast move. It covers both exports to Russia and production in the country. Unlike many in the sector, BMW resisted playing the game of furloughing employees to see what will happen, as many other automakers did. It was a bit easier for BMW because of the relatively small production in Russia and level of exports to the country. GM and Mercedes-Benz beat BMW in the Speed of Announcement, so BMW lost 2 points in Chicken Penalty. Full marks, however, to the company for being a Denouncer. This sort of comment burns bridges, so BMW may have trouble getting back into Russia short of a regime change. The impact of a luxury brand leaving boosts the Power score, which gave the company a 500% Return on Sacrifice for doing the right thing. Nice moral-commercial investment.

Initially, BNP actioned a “temporary” suspension of its Russia equity fund. It said it was “fully committed” to helping Ukraine during the “conflict”. On 22 March, the Financial Times reported that it will end all business operations in Russia, but cease new business in the meantime.

Our Moral Verdict

Reading what banks have done about Russia is like playing a game of ‘Spot the Difference’. JPMorgan said it would be “unwinding” its Russian business, Goldman Sachs said it would be “winding down”. These two parrots said almost the same thing on the same day. Then, three others followed the parrots like sheep out of Russia, half-heartedly: Citi gave the excuse of “new business or clients”, HSBC “new business or customers” and BNP “any new business”. Either they must think the same way or be using the same PR strategist. These excuses make them all Nibblers.

Similarities aside, BNP’s statement is too vague to get many points from us. Why can’t it give even a ballpark date for when its Russian operations will end? It’s not unreasonable to expect more clarity from a company that claims it’s “fully committed” to helping Ukraine, for which we must give put it in the Big Talker category.

Banding together with peers is worse than BNP misbehaving on its own. This adds to the contagion effect which is why we give Leader of the Pack bonuses to discourage sheeplike behavior. Besides, safety in numbers may seem like a clever strategy until you’re exposed as being in the doghouse, which is how we rate this bunch of banks. We are calling them all out for not getting out properly.

BNP should break ranks, and get credit for launching a Domino Effect on the rest of the flock.

Its move was Partial & Incomplete. Partial because it excluded health-related products, as a Confused Humanitarian does, and Incomplete by continuing to support employees, as a Nibbler does. Although it used the word "focus" to describe the continuing products, we don't know if it is focused on the majority of what it had. On top of that, after a Red Herring statement about not making future investments, it had poor Attitude, with a Mealy-Mouther statement that didn't clearly take sides. To make matters worse, it would be a small Sacrifice even if the company withdrew from every product because we estimate Russia at less than 1% of profits. To make matters worse still, this small Exposure compares to a Power Score of 8.5 since P&G employs about 5,000 people in Russia and could have had an Ostracizing effect by pulling so many consumer brands from the shelves. This meant P&G was looking at an 850% Return on Sacrifice. It's a pity it made only a slice of this commercial-moral investment. It needs to cut the rest and sell the factories.

According to Philip Morris' website, it employs more than 3,200 people in Russia. It has two factories and Russia has become a significant market for the company since entering in the 1970s under an agreement with the USSR.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, the company said, "We have watched with shock the war in Ukraine and condemn the violence in the strongest possible terms." It announced the "suspension" of "planned investments", and that it "activated plans to scale down its manufacturing operations in Russia amid ongoing supply chain disruptions and the evolving regulatory environment."

In a later statement on 24 March, it detailed "concrete steps" and "discontinued a number of its cigarette products", "suspended marketing activities" in Russia and "canceled all product launches".

Our Moral Verdict

Philip Morris has made two different statements which together add up to very little. The first one could hardly have been vaguer – saying it had "activated plans" to scale back manufacturing. It also included a Red Herring about future investments. The second statement didn't add much more clarity. The company's first statement is the Announcement on which it is rated.

Despite condemning the war, Philip Morris focused on supply chain and regulatory issues as the reasons for its plans to cut back manufacturing, so it looked more commercially than morally motivated. Reasons aside, it's impossible to quantify how much of the in-country operations are planning to be reduced. Considering this, and that there was no statement about trade cutbacks, we are giving the company credit for 1.6 points in Degree.

It does, however, get a good Speed Score, partly for its early statement, but also for beating British American Tobacco by two days, for which we gave PM a Leader of Pack bonus. The Exposure level is one of the highest we have monitored. Whether we measure the company on profits, revenues, or employees in Russia, it breaks the top threshold. Although we don't excuse Philip Morris for its failure to do the right thing, it's clear that it has a huge financial disincentive to get out of Russia. This is the sort of situation that may require Western sanctions to see proper action.

Bosch was reported by Bloomberg to have "halted deliveries of truck components to Russian customers" as parts "may have been misused" by the Russian infantry. The article also reported "that production in its Russian factories would be cut back due to disrupted supply chains and the halt of deliveries", and that it "anticipates suspending production completely in all its Russian factories, including its household-goods plant in St. Petersburg." Regarding the situation in Ukraine, its statement said, "war can never be the answer to political conflict".

Our Moral Verdict
Bosch wasn't serious about leaving Russia. That was bad enough, but it was able to hide in the same boat as other companies remaining in Russia. That safety-in-numbers game came to a crashing end when Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba claimed Bosch parts were found in Russian military vehicles. Bosch suddenly became not only a company failing to leave but allegedly also breaking EU sanctions. The company's response was pitiful. That would have been the moment to get out of Russia completely rather than keep options open with the regime when under so much scrutiny. The Announcement itself committed to ceasing supplies of truck components and added the company "anticipates suspending" production in Russia. The "anticipates" means it failed to get credit from us for that part, and the "suspending" would make it a Mothballer anyway. In terms of timing, even when Bosch did make a move, it was later than the rest of the sector, along with Bridgestone, and trailing other auto parts producers pulling out of Russia such as Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mazda, Magna, ZF Freidrichshafen, Continental, and Zhejiang Geely. For this it gets a Chicken Penalty. It also lost Speed points because it received criticism from the Ukrainian government before making its Announcement. This litany of deficiencies eroded its Moral Rating down to minus 4 points, which is the lowest rating given for a company that has left Russia.

Netflix first Announced it would "pause" all future projects and acquisitions, as reported by the BBC, before subsequently announcing on 7 March it would "pull its streaming service in Russia" due to the "circumstances on the ground". Russian-origin cartoons such as Masha and the Bear are still accessible to users outside Russia.

Our Moral Verdict

After timidly saying it would only pause future and current Russian projects, Netflix quickly realized this wasn't enough and cut Russian access to its streaming services. Since there were only five days between the two events, we have given the company the benefit of the doubt and scored the whole package of actions but scored Speed when the package was complete. This is therefore a case of a Full & Complete. Netflix does continue to stream Russian-made content to the world. If, by doing so, it is generating royalties to the Russian licenser, according to our rules it should withhold payments under our concept of Moral Force Majeure and take any legal consequences on the chin. If there are none, it should then pass on the cost savings to Ukraine, so it doesn't boost Netflix profits at all.

Referring to the war as "the situation on the ground" makes the company a Mealy-Mouther. Netflix broadcasts movies every day about good and evil but can't broadcast those words itself.

An estimated 1 million Russian subscribers sound like a lot of customers for the company to lose, but it will be left with over 200 million. It's a pity the company needed a few days to think about doing the right thing for 0.5%. Even so, Netflix got an Oscar for Speed, reaching 9 points because it got a Leader of Pack Bonus for coming out three days ahead of Walt Disney and a week ahead of ViacomCBS.

The low Sacrifice contrasts with a huge psychological impact on Russia because of the Ostracizing effect of pulling entertainment from a million Russians. Netflix addiction may be bad for the health but yanking the Russian people off something they are addicted to is exactly what the doctor ordered right now. Perhaps Russians will have a bit more time to think about what's going on in the real world outside, across the border in Ukraine. Netflix's Exposure and Power scores produce a 1,000% Return on Sacrifice. Thanks Netflix, for implementing that moral-commercial trade-off.

According to the company's Announcement, it took the decision to "temporarily" close its "own" stores and directly operated counters, as well as "suspending industrial and national media investments", and closing its "own brand" e-commerce sites in Russia. It said it was "still taking care" of its 2,500 Russian employees. It pledged donations of up to €5 million with the words, "strongly condemn the Russian invasion."

Our Moral Verdict
This is a case of a company doing something by half measure and then only to some degree. L'Oréal has stopped is retailing-facing businesses, but the Announcement doesn't close off its product sales through other people's stores. On top of what we define as Half-Hearted, it said the decision was "temporary". Also, it is classified as a Nibbler for continuing to support its 2,500 employees. All these deficiencies continue to feed the Russian economy. The statement wasn't helpful, explaining what the company temporarily did rather than what it didn't (manufacturing in Russia), and it included a Red Herring about not making future investments. What we need to know is when it will stop what it is doing, rather than that it will not do what it isn’t yet doing! L'Oréal waited to make its move until after P&G, for which we gave it a Chicken Penalty on Speed. Unlike many Confused Humanitarian peer companies in the consumer product sector, it resisted the temptation to say it was producing essential goods. Indeed, that would be a stretch for a brand associated more with cosmetic than pure health, and luxury rather than staple. L'Oréal might have been furious to see P&G making “personal care" one of its carve-outs. Against all of this, L'Oréal strangely was a Denouncer, with a bold statement against Russia. This might make propagandized Russian consumers less likely to want to touch L'Oréal products still on the shelves. Like Unilever, this is either a case of hypocrisy or one part of the company thinks Russia is bad and the other thinks it is fine to do business there.

P&G got almost everything wrong except the timing. It beat Unilever and L’Oréal by 24 hours, for which it got a Leader of the Pack bonus. After that, everything went downhill. Its move was Partial & Incomplete. Partial because it excluded health-related products, as a Confused Humanitarian does, and Incomplete by continuing to support employees, as a Nibbler does. Although it used the word "focus" to describe the continuing products, we don't know if it is focused on the majority of what it had. On top of that, after a Red Herring statement about not making future investments, it had poor Attitude, with a Mealy-Mouther statement that didn't clearly take sides. To make matters worse, it would be a small Sacrifice even if the company withdrew from every product because we estimate Russia at less than 1% of profits. To make matters worse still, this small Exposure compares to a Power Score of 8.5 since P&G employs about 5,000 people in Russia and could have had an Ostracizing effect by pulling so many consumer brands from the shelves. This meant P&G was looking at an 850% Return on Sacrifice. It's a pity it made only a slice of this commercial-moral investment. It needs to cut the rest and sell the factories.
