Bank of America operates in Russia where it has 50 employees, according to the Financial Times. We have not monitored any withdrawal Announcement.
Our Moral Verdict

This is a rare case of a bank from a democracy behaving worse than one from a totalitarian regime that is in cahoots with Russia. BoA remains in Russia, while HSBC, with its close Chinese relations and perhaps facing the prospect of retaliation from the government, has at least made an effort to partially get out.

This is the severest admonishment we can give to a Western company that it is free to do the right thing and does less than another that isn’t free. There is nothing more to say.

Though the size of the company's operations in Russia is unknown, Reuters reported its Singapore operation ceased financing deals that involved Russian commodities. No news has been reported about other business in or with Russia.
Date of Announcement: 28 February 2022
Our Moral Verdict
In keeping with almost every Chinese company we have monitored, the parent company says nothing about the invasion and nothing about what they are doing or not doing about Russia. They rarely even take silent action as they may well be warned not to do so by the Chinese government. Therefore, we welcome this ‘drop in the ocean’ withdrawal by one sole Bank of China office, which stopped Russian commodity financing, citing the impact of sanctions. It looks like a pragmatic rather than moral action and, indeed, it made no direct comment about the invasion. According to our rating methodology, since it made a Partial and Incomplete, albeit extremely Partial and extremely Complete, it does get a one point for Degree along with some Speed points. As a result of the early timing, it managed to get a Moral Rating above zero. Most Chinese companies are well into the negative. Speed is not always as moral as it might look.

JPMorgan said it would be "unwinding", "in compliance with directives by governments around the world" and had not been “pursuing any new business”. The bank added, “current activities are limited, including helping global clients address and close out pre-existing obligations; managing their Russian-related risk; acting as a custodian to our clients; and taking care of our employees.”

JPMorgan was later criticized by Senator Elizabeth Warren for continuing to trade Russian debt on the secondary market. She described JPMorgan’s actions, along with Goldman Sachs’, as “war profiteering”.

Date of Announcement: 10 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

Reading what banks have done about Russia is like playing a game of ‘Spot the Difference’. JPMorgan said it would be “unwinding” its Russian business, Goldman Sachs said it would be “winding down”. These two parrots said almost the same thing on the same day. Then, three others followed the parrots like sheep out of Russia, half-heartedly: Citi gave the excuse of “new business or clients”, HSBC “new business or customers” and BNP “any new business”. Either they must think the same way or be using the same PR strategist. These excuses make them all Nibblers.

JPMorgan’s statement is too vague to get many points from us. When will this famous unwinding actually start or be completed? Moreover, doing the wrong thing to help others do the right thing sounds like a moral derivative rather than the financial derivative JPMorgan invented in 1994. We also wonder how much money there is to be made by “helping” others. This and the bank’s excuse for delay also being needed to take care of employees classifies it as what we politely call a Confused Humanitarian in our lexicon. Finally, if that is not enough to be embarrassed about, the bank continued to trade Russian debt through a loophole.

Banding together with peers is worse than misbehaving on its own. This adds to the contagion effect which is why we give Leader of the Pack bonuses to discourage sheeplike behavior. Besides, safety in numbers may seem like a clever strategy until you’re exposed as being in the doghouse, which is how we rate this bunch of banks. We are calling them all out for not getting out properly.

The investment banking pioneer should show some pioneering spirit, break ranks, and get credit for launching a Domino Effect on the rest of the flock. It’s a pity when a company known for being fast and courageous for its own profit is so slow and morally uncourageous when the profit isn’t there.

No Announcement was found about the company's plans for discontinuing its car and van exports to Russia. On 24 March, the FT reported that the company has been planning to increase its exports to Russia.
Our Moral Verdict
China's largest car producer (5 million cars/year) needs to stop selling cars and vans to Russia and join Western auto producers in cutting Russia off.  The other major Chinese auto makers (Dongfeng, FAW and Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group) have also continued working with Russia while saying very little (apart from GAIG).  Each wields psychological and strategic Power over Russia which can be realized with such an action, beyond its own small economic impact.

It has "suspended" shipment of retail products to customers based in Russia and Belarus and will "no longer be accepting new Russia and Belarus-based AWS sign-ups and Amazon third-party sellers." The statement also reported "suspending access to Prime Video for customers based in Russia", and said it had stopped taking orders for New World, its only video game directly sold in Russia. As for the reason, it said, "We have a long-standing policy of not doing business with the Russian government" and it expressed "horror and concern" about the situation.
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

This is a company that has prided itself on not getting its hands dirty with Russia, specifically citing its long-standing policy of working with the Russian market from the outside. Given this pre-invasion distancing policy, it is surprising it took the company so long to make its move. Peers in online businesses moved earlier (Meta on 25 February and Alphabet on 4 March). For this delay, Amazon's Speed Score suffered a Chicken Penalty of 2. It also suffered a Pressure Penalty of 2 for moving after it received a letter from the Ukrainian government asking it to cut off the AWS Cloud Services in Russia. Also, the wording of Amazon's statement (referring to historical policies and not ascribing its "horror" to the perpetrator) puts it in the Mealy-Mouther category. If it has never wanted to associate with the Russian government, why can't it admonish the invasion properly?

Meanwhile, it made a big deal of the contributions to Ukraine, but as a percentage of its profits these are de minimis. For all these reasons, this without-excuse company could have got a rating of 100 instead of 62. What's really important, however, is that Amazon did the right thing and delivered impact. Our calculations show an Exposure level of only 1, partly on account of the sheer size of Amazon, in contrast to a Power level of 10. This meant the company was looking at a morally/commercially irresistible Return on Sacrifice opportunity of 1,000%. Amazon made the right decision even if it was a no-brainer.

Koç is linked to Russia via numerous subsidiaries, such as Arcelik and Tupras, which have local production facilities. We have not monitored any withdrawal Announcement.
Our Moral Verdict
Koç is Turkey’s only representative in Fortune’s Global Top 500 companies. It’s a shame, therefore, that it hasn’t even made it off the starting blocks in the world’s slow race to leave Russia. If it disposed of its Russian production facilities, it could rescue Turkey’s reputation in a single shot, from 0% failure to 100% success out of this sample of one.

Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) sold its Russian business, Alliance Healthcare Russia, to a listed Russian health and beauty retailer named "36.6" in 2016. In return, it received a 15% stake in 36.6.

The company confirmed to the Moral Rating Agency (MRA) on 5 June 2022 that its ownership in 36.6 has been reduced to less than 5% as of 5 June. It did not disclose whether any of this reduction was made after the invasion.

The company also told MRA that it has not carried on any activities in the local market or made any investments since this sale in 2016 and that its continuing stake in 36.6 is a "legacy of the sale".

Prior to its response to MRA, on 10 March, the company said its thoughts were with the people of Ukraine, as well as "all those affected" by the "humanitarian crisis". It also said it was giving humanitarian support to Ukraine, including a donation of over $1 million.

Our Moral Verdict

WBA has to all intents and purposes moved out of Russia many years ago. According to our rating rules, it should have sold its remaining stake in Russian company 36.6. In the absence of information to show that this stake has been reduced since the invasion in its Announcement to us, we cannot give it credit for withdrawing.

The rating is low but if the company confirms that it has sold its stake, or that this is in process, we will re-rate it accordingly. Unlike other pharma and pharma retail groups involved in Russia, WBA is not a direct participant in the market and is a de minimis financial player.

Saint-Gobain has stopped exports and imports with Russia and Belarus. It said, "Local activities are now operating at a minimum and in autonomous mode to maintain the employment of employees and to mitigate the consequences of this war for them and their families, in accordance with our corporate social responsibility".

The company also stated that all "investment projects" had been canceled. In addition to showing "solidarity" with Ukraine, it said, "The group strongly condemns this war."

Date of Announcement: 22 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

Saint-Gobain is a Confused Humanitarian, in this case on behalf of Russian employees and families, citing social responsibility in its company policies as the reason it would continue production in Russia. Social responsibility needs to extend to the impact you have on society at large and not just employees. The use of the words "as a minimum" to describe ongoing production is vague. It also threw in a Red Herring about not making future investments.

Continuing some level of production, regardless of the excuse, gets a low credit in Degree, which was brought up a bit for completely withdrawing from exports and imports. The company was also slow to do so little, following CRH and Holcim by nearly three weeks, for which it got a Chicken Penalty.

This too-little-too-late company at least condemned the war, which qualified it for Denouncer status, but the contrast between the poor action and strong words put it into the Big Talker category. We calculated its Exposure at only 1.3 which makes all of its efforts to explain itself even less understandable.

Notice

The entire website and our rating methodology are based on a company’s involvement with Russia being measured by Announcements.

We measure this against the ways a company can be involved with Russia through its Activities.

Please also be aware of the Scope of our research, limitations due to Incomplete Information, our Rating Methodology , and our policy relating to any Errors, Omissions & Corrections.

Also, be aware that brands carry the rating information of the company that owns, controls or is associated with them as defined more precisely in Brands Displayed.

The basis of “Rating as of” date is explained here.

Want to give us information on a company?

We will be extending our service from the top 200 companies in the world to the top 500. We are interested in information about their continuing involvement with or in Russia from reliable published sources.

Want to suggest a correction to your company?

If you represent a corporation and feel it is inaccurately or otherwise unfairly presented, you should email us in the window below a scan of a document signed by a director of the ultimate parent company (“Parent”) we listed on the site, stating your position about our information as of the ‘Rating as of’ date listed below our information providing a clear factual statement in support of your disagreement in such a manner and in sufficient detail that we will be able to re-rate the company in accordance with our Rating Methodology. If you do not provide sufficient detail, we will not consider re-rating and do not have time to engage in discussions but will solely consider sufficiently comprehensive information via this process.
