Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) sold its Russian business, Alliance Healthcare Russia, to a listed Russian health and beauty retailer named "36.6" in 2016. In return, it received a 15% stake in 36.6.

The company confirmed to the Moral Rating Agency (MRA) on 5 June 2022 that its ownership in 36.6 has been reduced to less than 5% as of 5 June. It did not disclose whether any of this reduction was made after the invasion.

The company also told MRA that it has not carried on any activities in the local market or made any investments since this sale in 2016 and that its continuing stake in 36.6 is a "legacy of the sale".

Prior to its response to MRA, on 10 March, the company said its thoughts were with the people of Ukraine, as well as "all those affected" by the "humanitarian crisis". It also said it was giving humanitarian support to Ukraine, including a donation of over $1 million.

Our Moral Verdict

WBA has to all intents and purposes moved out of Russia many years ago. According to our rating rules, it should have sold its remaining stake in Russian company 36.6. In the absence of information to show that this stake has been reduced since the invasion in its Announcement to us, we cannot give it credit for withdrawing.

The rating is low but if the company confirms that it has sold its stake, or that this is in process, we will re-rate it accordingly. Unlike other pharma and pharma retail groups involved in Russia, WBA is not a direct participant in the market and is a de minimus financial player.

It said it would suspend support services to Russian airlines, as well as the supply of spare parts to the country. The statement also said that The Airbus Engineering Center in Russia (ECAR) has "put on hold all its operations for Airbus" and is "analyzing" export control sanctions to determine whether engineering services, which ECAR provides to its Russian customers, can be maintained. According to Business Insider, the company will keep importing titanium from Russia, since Russia provides half of Airbus' needs.
Date of Announcement: 2 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
Airbus' behavior doesn't match up to Boeings'. The company is trying to do the least possible against the realities and pressures it has faced. Let's start with the timing. It made its Announcement on 2 March. Boeing had already moved on 28 February, for which Airbus gets a Chicken Penalty of 2 points in its Speed Score. To make matters worse, it only made a Partial move: it will continue importing Russian titanium, directly and indirectly. It was also figuring out if its Airbus Engineering Center in Russia would be allowed under export control sanctions to continue to serve Russian customers, showing where its heart really is, which makes its move not only Partial but also Incomplete. The company is clearly trying not to cut off Russia, and instead is simply doing what it practically must rather than morally should do. As a case of Partial & Incomplete, it gets only 4 points for Degree. The shortfall on both dimensions seems intentional. Of course, it has its commercial reasons – it is more dependent on Russian titanium than Boeing is – but it was Airbus' choice to be dependent on a regime-run nation that has been heading in the wrong direction for years, so the reason is no valid excuse. Against this behavior, it is no surprise we saw no statement against Russia – silence compared to Boeing's middle-of-the-road comment – the absence of which landed Airbus in the Strong Silent Type category. The way to understand and condone Airbus' behavior is to look at its Exposure, which we calculated at 7 compared to 2 for Boeing. The principal point is the very high dependency on Russian titanium, which, unlike Russian dependency on the West, is one of the few Russian exports that can interrupt Western production. As a rough guide, we judge this makes a total withdrawal from Russia 3.5 times more painful for Airbus than Boeing. Airbus, as the world's largest aircraft producer, needs to step up to a moral leadership position and make a Full and Complete withdrawal from Russia.

Koç is linked to Russia via numerous subsidiaries, such as Arcelik and Tupras, which have local production facilities. We have not monitored any withdrawal Announcement.
Our Moral Verdict
Koç is Turkey’s only representative in Fortune’s Global Top 500 companies. It’s a shame, therefore, that it hasn’t even made it off the starting blocks in the world’s slow race to leave Russia. If it disposed of its Russian production facilities, it could rescue, in a single shot, Turkey’s reputation from 0% failure to 100% success out of this sample of one.

This is a small importer from Russia. It stopped the activity with immediate effect, reporting it would donate £2,000,000 to Ukraine's humanitarian causes. In terms of comment on the situation, it said it would change the spelling of its "Chicken Kiev" product to "Kyiv" in solidarity with Ukraine which prefers the proper Ukrainian spelling.
Date of Announcement: 4 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
On the surface, it looks like the company moved quite fast, but it got a Chicken Penalty of two points for being behind peers such as Coles Group, Publix Super Markets and Coop Group. Since it had so few Russian products on its shelves, it could have moved without a moment's hesitation after the invasion. This is clearly a cameo player in the boycotting of Russia, but these consumer brand statements are helpful to get the world behind a boycott, so it comes with that extra moral responsibility. Its donation was meaningful to its profits especially considering that it has not been a significant major commercial beneficiary from Russia.

Netflix first Announced it would "pause" all future projects and acquisitions, as reported by the BBC, before subsequently announcing on 7 March it would "pull its streaming service in Russia" due to the "circumstances on the ground". Russian-origin cartoons such as Masha and the Bear are still accessible to users outside Russia.
Date of Announcement: 7 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

After timidly saying it would only pause future and current Russian projects, Netflix quickly realized this wasn't enough and cut Russian access to its streaming services. Since there were only five days between the two events, we have given the company the benefit of the doubt and scored the whole package of actions but scored Speed when the package was complete. This is therefore a case of a Full & Complete. Netflix does continue to stream Russian-made content to the world. If, by doing so, it is generating royalties to the Russian licenser, according to our rules it should withhold payments under our concept of Moral Force Majeure and take any legal consequences on the chin. If there are none, it should then pass on the cost savings to Ukraine, so it doesn't boost Netflix profits at all.

Referring to the war as "the situation on the ground" makes the company a Mealy-Mouther. Netflix broadcasts movies every day about good and evil but can't broadcast those words itself.

An estimated 1 million Russian subscribers sound like a lot of customers for the company to lose, but it will be left with over 200 million. It's a pity the company needed a few days to think about doing the right thing for 0.5%. Even so, Netflix got an Oscar for Speed, reaching 9 points because it got a Leader of Pack Bonus for coming out three days ahead of Walt Disney and a week ahead of ViacomCBS.

The low Sacrifice contrasts with a huge psychological impact on Russia because of the Ostracizing effect of pulling entertainment from a million Russians. Netflix addiction may be bad for the health but yanking the Russian people off something they are addicted to is exactly what the doctor ordered right now. Perhaps Russians will have a bit more time to think about what's going on in the real world outside, across the border in Ukraine. Netflix's Exposure and Power scores produce a 1,000% Return on Sacrifice. Thanks Netflix, for implementing that moral-commercial trade-off.

It made an Announcement on 14 March that it would stop "all exports to Russia with immediate effect", and is "suspending" manufacturing activities in Russia "until further notice", a decision that took effect from 18 March. The company also decided to "freeze any new investments". The statement also said it will continue to financially support its employees in its "passenger tire production plant in Ulyanovsk and sales offices."
Date of Announcement: 14 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
Bridgestone was at the back of the pack with Bosch among auto parts producers pulling out of Russia. It trailed companies such as Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mazda, Magna, ZF Freidrichshafen, Continental, and even Chinese producer Zhejiang Geely. So, it was awarded a Chicken Penalty. Under our rating rules, freezing new investments is considered a Red Herring. Anyone would be crazy to be investing in Russia today. Anyway, we are interested in existing businesses being stopped rather than things that haven't happened not happening. Suspending production until further notice doesn't make the grade – and continuing to support employees makes the Announcement doubly incomplete, the former making Bridgestone a Mothballer and the latter making it a Nibbler. Moreover, the company's statement about the war didn't admonish Russia enough, so it was also classified as a Mealy-Mouther. Bridgestone needs to pull out of Russia properly and not leave us in limbo any longer.

The company classifies its activities in Russia as an investment, called AliExpress Russia (a joint venture, of which it owns 48%). AliExpress Russia currently controls about 10% of Russia's e-commerce market. Nikkei Asia first reported via an "employee with knowledge on the matter" that "its joint venture in Russia has laid off about 40% of employees since the invasion of Ukraine". This is believed to be a result of Western sanctions' impact on the Russian market, leaving these positions untenable for the company.
Our Moral Verdict
We were not sure whether we should compare Alibaba morally with Amazon, to show the contrast, or with fellow-Chinese company JD.com, to show the moral similarity. One is a comparison of apples and oranges and the other a comparison of two rotten apples. Comparing a company from a democracy with one from a totalitarian state is dramatic but perhaps obvious. We will look at Alibaba both ways. Amazon is one of a handful of companies in the world that has been able to get out of Russia completely. We graded it Full & Complete twelve days after the invasion. Alibaba is at the opposite end of the spectrum. It's a pity that the two companies don't have the same customers because the moral difference might win Amazon a lot of new users. Like JD.com, Alibaba operates in Russia with its strong local partner in Russia, with Alibaba owning 48% in AliExpress. Both JD.com and Alibaba ship Chinese and foreign goods into Russia from their own China-based platforms. Both have the Chinese government as cover for their inactions and both stand to gain from Russia's increasing dependence on trade with China. Indeed, we could say one is copying the other, were it not for the fact that inaction has no date to show which failed to act first. The only difference we see is in Exposure level. Alibaba's 48% stake in AliExpress is worth $3.2bn (1.25% of Alibaba's own market value), which translates to a 3.8 Exposure Score. This compares to JD's Exposure level of 2. So, mathematically, we can say that Alibaba is 75% less likely, or at least less motivated, to leave Russia. Unless of course one chooses to be more moral than the other!

Dell exports computers and related products to Russia. Its website currently states that Dell provides support services to its data storage and protection solutions in Russia. It has "suspended all product sales in Russia", as reported in Wall Street Journal. It stated, "It's a great tragedy and very disappointing to see a humanitarian disaster". We have not monitored a statement on the in-country operations.
Date of Announcement: 1 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
The Announcement looks convincing, but we found saw no reference to inside-Russia Activities. The jobs part of Dell's site shows positions have been offered in the company's St. Petersburg Development Center (working with data storage and protection systems) and in Moscow and the regions in marketing, sales, presales, implementation, and consulting. In the absence of these being included in the Announcement, we reduced its Degree Score to 7. In Speed it got Chicken Penalty for being behind HP. Dell was a Mealy-Mouther when it came to its reason, failing to clearly take sides in the war but a donation of around 0.5% of profits brought its Attitude Score up. Comparing its Russian revenues with total revenues for 2020, it would have had an Exposure level of 2. The booster we give to Dell's products and services gave it a Power measure of 10, leading to a Return on Sacrifice of 500%.

The company discontinued "new capital investments" in Russia, and suspended media, advertising, and promotion. It reduced its Russian activities "significantly" to "focus" on providing "basic health, hygiene and personal care items" needed by Russians who "depend on them", as per its 7 March Announcement.

The company condemned aggression "in any circumstance" and said its hearts go out to "all people who endure the unspeakable toll of war". It said it would support its employees in Russia.

Date of Announcement: 7 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
P&G got almost everything wrong except the timing. It beat Unilever and L’Oréal by 24 hours, for which it got a Leader of the Pack bonus. After that, everything is downhill. Its move was Partial & Incomplete. Partial because it excluded health-related products, as a Confused Humanitarian does, and Incomplete by continuing to support employees, as a Nibbler does. Although it used the word "focus" to describe the continuing products, we don't know if it is focused on the majority of what it had. On top of that, after a Red Herring statement about not making future investments, it had poor Attitude, with a Mealy-Mouther statement that didn't clearly take sides. Compare this bad behavior to what would be a small Sacrifice even if it withdrew from every product irrevocably because we estimate Russia at less than 1% of profits. To make matters worse, this small Exposure compares to a Power Score of 8.5 since P&G employs about 5,000 people in Russia and could have had an Ostracizing effect by pulling so many consumer brands from the shelves. This meant P&G was looking at an 850% Return on Sacrifice. It's a pity it made only a slice of this commercial-moral investment. It needs to cut the rest and sell the factories.

Notice

The entire website and our rating methodology are based on a company’s involvement with Russia being measured by Announcements.

We measure this against the ways a company can be involved with Russia through its Activities.

Please also be aware of the Scope of our research, limitations due to Incomplete Information, our Rating Methodology , and our policy relating to any Errors, Omissions & Corrections.

Also, be aware that brands carry the rating information of the company that owns, controls or is associated with them as defined more precisely in Brands Displayed.

The basis of “Rating as of” date is explained here.

Want to give us information on a company?

We will be extending our service from the top 200 companies in the world to the top 500. We are interested in information about their continuing involvement with or in Russia from reliable published sources.

Want to suggest a correction to your company?

If you represent a corporation and feel it is inaccurately or otherwise unfairly presented, you should email us in the window below a scan of a document signed by a director of the ultimate parent company (“Parent”) we listed on the site, stating your position about our information as of the ‘Rating as of’ date listed below our information providing a clear factual statement in support of your disagreement in such a manner and in sufficient detail that we will be able to re-rate the company in accordance with our Rating Methodology. If you do not provide sufficient detail, we will not consider re-rating and do not have time to engage in discussions but will solely consider sufficiently comprehensive information via this process.
