After mounting boycotting pressure, PepsiCo suspended production in Russia, apart from essential food items such as milk and baby food because of its "humanitarian obligation" mentioning this would allow it to support 20,000 employees and 40,000 agricultural workers in its supply chain. The CEO said, "My heart goes out to all those who are caught in the middle of this deadly conflict. As it so often does, war is falling hardest on the innocent. War is never an answer, and we join all those calling for a speedy, peaceful resolution."
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
PepsiCo and Coca-Cola seem to look over their shoulders at each other, even in times of war. It is perhaps no surprise that they made their moves away from Russia at almost the same time, each afraid of being singled out for escalated consumer boycotting and focused admonishment by Ukraine's government. There were of course many other food & beverage businesses with different positions on the topic, but in the court of popular opinion these two were going to be measured against one another. Based on the Bloomberg reports, Pepsi was 17 minutes behind Coca-Cola. Google showed a link to the Coca-Cola release even earlier. So, PepsiCo was first into the Soviet Union (1974) and last out of Russia. The company is much more deeply in the country as a result, in range of products, factories, number of employees (20,000 vs. 7,000 for Coca-Cola), and a 5% impact on profits vs. 2% for Coca-Cola. Pepsi therefore gets more points for Sacrifice but less on other measures. Its Speed Score got a Chicken Penalty as well as a Pressure Penalty for moving post-boycott. Its Degree Score is damaged by being Partial & Incomplete: Partial because it excluded milk products as a Confused Humanitarian does, and Incomplete because it is continuing to support its workforce and 40,000 Russian farmers, as a Nibbler does. This means 60,000 fewer people financially motivated to pressure Putin. Its Attitude was damaged by being a Mealy-Mouther: by saying people are "caught in the middle" avoids taking sides. Pepsi needs to get out Fully and Completely and sell its factories.

The company discontinued "new capital investments" in Russia, and suspended media, advertising, and promotion. It reduced its Russian activities "significantly" to "focus" on providing "basic health, hygiene and personal care items" needed by Russians who "depend on them", as per its 7 March Announcement.

The company condemned aggression "in any circumstance" and said its hearts go out to "all people who endure the unspeakable toll of war". It said it would support its employees in Russia.

Date of Announcement: 7 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
P&G got almost everything wrong except the timing. It beat Unilever and L’Oréal by 24 hours, for which it got a Leader of the Pack bonus. After that, everything is downhill. Its move was Partial & Incomplete. Partial because it excluded health-related products, as a Confused Humanitarian does, and Incomplete by continuing to support employees, as a Nibbler does. Although it used the word "focus" to describe the continuing products, we don't know if it is focused on the majority of what it had. On top of that, after a Red Herring statement about not making future investments, it had poor Attitude, with a Mealy-Mouther statement that didn't clearly take sides. Compare this bad behavior to what would be a small Sacrifice even if it withdrew from every product irrevocably because we estimate Russia at less than 1% of profits. To make matters worse, this small Exposure compares to a Power Score of 8.5 since P&G employs about 5,000 people in Russia and could have had an Ostracizing effect by pulling so many consumer brands from the shelves. This meant P&G was looking at an 850% Return on Sacrifice. It's a pity it made only a slice of this commercial-moral investment. It needs to cut the rest and sell the factories.

Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

This is a company that has prided itself on not getting its hands dirty with Russia, specifically citing its long-standing policy of working with the Russian market from the outside. Given this pre-invasion distancing policy, it is surprising it took the company so long to make its move. Peers in online businesses moved earlier (Meta on 25 February and Alphabet on 4 March). For this delay, Amazon's Speed Score suffered a Chicken Penalty of 2. It also suffered a Pressure Penalty of 2 for moving after it received a letter from the Ukrainian government asking it to cut off the AWS Cloud Services in Russia. Also, the wording of Amazon's statement (referring to historical policies and not ascribing its "horror" to the perpetrator) puts it in the Mealy-Mouther category. If it has never wanted to associate with the Russian government, why can't it admonish the invasion properly?

Meanwhile, it made a big deal of the contributions to Ukraine, but as a percentage of its profits these are de minimus. For all of these reasons, this without-excuse company could have got a rating of 100 instead of 62. What's really important, however, is that Amazon did the right thing and delivered impact. Our calculations show an Exposure level of only 1, in part on account of the sheer size of Amazon, in contrast to a Power level of 10. This meant the company was looking at a morally/commercially irresistible Return on Sacrifice opportunity of 1,000%. Amazon made the right decision even if it was a no-brainer.

Prior to its Announcement, Coca-Cola was under pressure from consumers and Western celebrities to halt Russian operations. The company then stated it "is suspending its business in Russia." Coca-Cola added, "Our hearts are with the people who are enduring unconscionable effects from these tragic events in Ukraine." Shortly afterward, its franchisee covering Russia, Coca-Cola HBC, agreed with Atlanta's decision and confirmed it would "stop selling in Russia".
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
Between Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, Coca-Cola was the last one to get into the Soviet Union and the first to get out of Russia. Coca-Cola beat Pepsi to the punch. Coca-Cola’s press release was published on 7 March on Google. Also, when Bloomberg announced their exit, Coca-Cola was 17 minutes ahead of them. We gave Coca-Cola a Leader of Pack Bonus of 2 points. Indeed, its own action might be credited with the Domino Exit of PepsiCo, at least in timing if not in the sense it wouldn't have happened at some point. Competitive timing aside, the Coca-Cola withdrawal is otherwise a story of reaction rather than action, which gives it a different moral color. There was a public boycott trending on social media beforehand, including celebrity criticism, and you rather wonder why it took two weeks after an invasion that dominated world consciousness to take action. When the decision was taken a week after the company had found the time to make a donation to Ukraine, it didn't even condemn Russia, so we deemed it a Mealy-Mouther and cut its Attitude Score in half. By not moving until after the boycott and for mincing its words, the company lost the opportunity to be a corporate moral leader. Coca-Cola’s donation to Ukraine makes up 0.2% of its profits, almost identical to what PepsiCo announced a few hours later. Coca-Cola continues to own a minority in the European franchisee that is retaining the mothballed bottling plants. It would have had to sell this stake to get a 10 Degree Score. We estimate Coca-Cola’s Exposure is 2% of its profits. Its Power comes from the 7,000 people it indirectly employs in Russia and is boosted by the psychological impact of withdrawing such a famous brand, resulting in a 200% Return on Sacrifice. In short, this looks more like a story of calculated reaction than visceral action, but at least Coca-Cola got there first.

According to the company's Announcement, it took the decision to "temporarily" close its "own" stores and directly operated counters, as well as "suspending industrial and national media investments", and closing its "own brand" e-commerce sites in Russia. It said it was "still taking care" of its 2,500 Russian employees. It pledged donations of up to €5 million and "strongly condemn the Russian invasion."
Date of Announcement: 8 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict
This is a case of a company doing something by half measure and then only to some degree. L'Oréal has stopped is retailing-facing businesses, but the Announcement doesn't close off its product sales through other people's stores. On top of what we define as Half-Hearted, it said the decision was "temporary". Also, it is classified as a Nibbler for continuing to support its 2,500 employees. All these deficiencies continue to feed the Russian economy. The statement wasn't helpful, explaining what the company temporarily did rather than what it didn't (manufacturing in Russia), and it included a Red Herring about not making future investments. What we need to know is when it will stop what it is doing, not when they it will stop doing what it isn't yet doing! L'Oréal waited to make its move until after P&G, for which we gave it a Chicken Penalty on Speed. Unlike many Confused Humanitarian peer companies in the consumer product sector, it resisted the temptation to say it was producing essential goods. Indeed, that would be a stretch for a brand associated more with cosmetic than pure health, and luxury rather than staple. L'Oréal might have been furious to see P&G making “personal care" one of its carve-outs. Against all of this, L'Oréal strangely was a Denouncer, with a bold statement against Russia. This might make propagandized Russian consumers less likely to want to touch L'Oréal products still on the shelves. Like Unilever, this is either a case of hypocrisy or one part of the company thinks Russia is bad and the other thinks it is fine to do business there.

GE has been involved in infrastructure projects in Russia from power, oil & gas, shipbuilding, and healthcare, it also owns subsidiaries there.

On 2 March, the company said it would temporarily pause support of airlines in Russia, and added, "The strength and courage of the Ukrainian people are an inspiration to the world". Six days later, according to Reuters, it said it was "suspending" its operations in Russia, with the exception of essential medical equipment and supporting existing power services.

Date of Announcement: 2 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

We decided to cut GE a bit of slack by rating its two statements as one because they were only six days apart. Even consolidating everything it plans to do, the company is not doing enough. It is suspending aviation and renewables, but plans to continue working in the healthcare and power sectors. The sectors covered are about half of GE's group sectors in revenues. However, they are only suspended, making GE not only a Partial but also a Mothballer. This results in a Degree Score of 3. GE moved in these sectors after both Siemens and ABB had made Announcements, earning GE a Chicken Penalty.

The company's Attitude was good, making a donation to Ukraine, and a statement in support of Ukraine that won't be welcome in the Kremlin. Indeed, it's hard to imagine how it will continue to work in Russian power plants and hospitals after saying it was inspired by the courage of Ukrainians.

It is a pity that the company wasn't able to put its money where its mouth is. The CEO confirmed less than 2% of revenues are dependent on Russia, giving it an Exposure level of 5 from us. We understand this may give the company pause for thought. However, compared to a almost 10 level for Power, GE was looking at a nearly 200% Return on Sacrifice. It's also far from clear how easy it will be for companies that half withdraw to win contracts in Russia. They may find the remaining operations are disadvantaged in the market and wonder why they didn't go the whole hog.

It operates numerous services to support the life sciences sector in Russia, from pharmaceutical sales, distribution, storage, consulting and running clinical trials in the country. Its Announcement stated it would "cease any new business initiatives in Russia", but that it would be "continuing distribution of pharmaceutical products" where it will provide "limited" logistical support. It will continue with its 60 clinical trials in Russia. It believes not following this policy would likely "amount to punitive action against the most vulnerable". It said, "hopes are that there will be a speedy resolution to the conflict with minimal loss of life", and as of 9 March, committed more than $600,000 through grant donations.
Date of Announcement: 9 March 2022
Our Moral Verdict

It is difficult to assess how much AmerisourceBergen has really pulled out of Russia. Most of its vast range of Activities have been included in the decision for some action, but they have made many exceptions. The big picture impression is the company is trying to draw a line under existing business (such as distributing pharmaceuticals, and ongoing clinical trials in the country). The company doesn't seem to be taking on new clients and or any new projects for existing clients (with the exception of pharmaceuticals distribution on which the wording keeps that option open). Therefore, we consider the Announcement Full in Breadth of Activities and very Incomplete and vague in Depth, assessing the withdrawal at 25%, or 2.5 points for Degree. Unsurprisingly, like many in the pharma sector, the company justified its ongoing business like a Confused Humanitarian. We support exceptions for life-saving drugs subject to them not being available as generics or equivalent from local producers, and for clinical trials of life-saving drugs, but not in a blanket way as is used by many companies in the sector to cover pharma and anything related to health, nutrition and even food.

AmerisourceBergen gets credit for its fast action, but gets a weak Attitude score because its statement about the war was a Mealy-Mouther and its donation was a tiny portion of its profits. Companies in this sector undoubtedly have difficult choices to make, but we expect each to make a clear statement that it withdraws from all Activities as a default position and then disclose and justify any exceptions in a specific way. Being a business with a humanitarian angle isn’t a carte blanche for doing whatever you want.

Notice

The entire website and our rating methodology are based on a company’s involvement with Russia being measured by Announcements.

We measure this against the ways a company can be involved with Russia through its Activities.

Please also be aware of the Scope of our research, limitations due to Incomplete Information, our Rating Methodology , and our policy relating to any Errors, Omissions & Corrections.

Also, be aware that brands carry the rating information of the company that owns, controls or is associated with them as defined more precisely in Brands Displayed.

The basis of “Rating as of” date is explained here.

Want to give us information on a company?

We will be extending our service from the top 200 companies in the world to the top 500. We are interested in information about their continuing involvement with or in Russia from reliable published sources.

Want to suggest a correction to your company?

If you represent a corporation and feel it is inaccurately or otherwise unfairly presented, you should email us in the window below a scan of a document signed by a director of the ultimate parent company (“Parent”) we listed on the site, stating your position about our information as of the ‘Rating as of’ date listed below our information providing a clear factual statement in support of your disagreement in such a manner and in sufficient detail that we will be able to re-rate the company in accordance with our Rating Methodology. If you do not provide sufficient detail, we will not consider re-rating and do not have time to engage in discussions but will solely consider sufficiently comprehensive information via this process.
